Deputy Prescott Honored Lifesaving Efforts Lauded at Annual Orange County Sheriff’s Department Event

T

he Medal of Lifesaving was awarded to San Clemente Police Serv-

ices Deputy Jeremiah Prescott at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Medal of Valor Awards Luncheon in Irvine on April 17, 2014. Annually the Orange County Sheriff’s De- partment honors its law en- forcement officers, recognizing their outstanding accomplish- ments. Deputy Prescott was lauded for saving the life of a critically injured motorcyclist. On the evening of August

9, 2013, Deputy Prescott, with his Special Enforcement Team partner, Deputy Richard Cov- ington, were stopped in an alley near the intersection at El Camino Real and Via Escalones when Deputy Prescott heard what sounded like a traffic collision. Deputy Prescott rushed to the fallen rider as Deputy Covington took con- trol of the traffic scene. Retired Los Angeles City Firefighter Gary Clark had witnessed the accident and was already at the victim’s side as- sessing the man’s condition. The victim was not breathing. Deputy Prescott checked for a radial pulse on the inside of the man’s arm but also found no indications of life. Both men in- stantly went into rescue mode. Deputy Prescott performed chest compressions while retired firefighter Clark gave rescue breaths. After three cycles of CPR, the man miraculously began gasping for air. “Deputy Prescott’s life-saving actions were

truly extraordinary. Our community is safely guarded with the dedicated deputies we have serving our residents. Not only do they keep crime at bay, but as seen with Deputy Prescott’s heroic actions, they also save lives“, said Mayor Tim Brown. In a separate event, the Orange County

Annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards pro- gram, which was hosted by OneOC in Ana- heim on April 9, 2014, included honoring two of San Clemente's Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) members. RSVP Volunteers Neal Barbanell and Doug Erway, volunteer with San Clemente Police Services and were recognized as outstanding community volun- teers, receiving honors in the Human & Com- munity category. Mr. Barbanell has been with the RSVP program for over 24 years. He has

Mr. Erway is celebrating 20 years as an

RSVP volunteer with San Clemente Police Services and has also served as Coordinator of the program. He is a retired Marine Lt Col. after 26 years, serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He also spent 10 years as a Personnel Officer, Civil Service Commission Executive Officer for the County of San Bernardino and five years as an Employee Representative for the San Bernardino Employees Association. He has served as President of the Grand Terrace Chamber of Commerce as well as Planning Commissioner and City Council Member for the City of Grand Terrace. He has received the City’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005 and was selected as San Clemente Citizen of the Year in 2006. He is a past President of the San Clemente Dons, an organization of business, professional and political individuals with a continuing interest in the community. Trails Closed for La Pata Construction W

ork on the County of Orange La Pata road extension began on April 4, 2014 following a groundbreak-

ing celebration with local officials and commu- nity members. As part of this work, the project contractor will temporarily close (and also re- route) a portion of one of the County’s dirt trails, the Prima Deshecha Regional Riding and Hiking Trail. The trail is located along the west side of

the Talega Planned Community in the north part of the City of San Clemente (a couple of miles north of the San Diego Freeway). The at- tached exhibit shows the route of the future roadway and where the existing trail will be im- pacted and where it will move to. This portion of the road project will require about two plus

years to complete. In addition to relocating the trail to a new

permanent location the County requested that the Prima Deshecha Trail be reconnected with the Forster Ridgeline Trail. The Forster Ridge- line Trail is a City of San Clemente Trail located on the west side of La Pata. To re-connect the two trails the road project will build a bridge over the roadway allowing users to avoid cross- ing the highway at an intersection. The public’s patience and cooperation is

appreciated during this period of time. For more information, feel free to contact Jeff Dickman, Trail Coordinator - Planner IV, OC Public Works at (714) 647-3937 or Laura Fer- guson, Public Information Officer, City of San Clemente at (949) 361-8254.❂
