YMCA INCLUSION PROGRAM Inclusion is the Best Policy
real population that needs the services and as- sistance of specially designed programs like those offered in the YMCA’s Inclusion Pro- gram.
This program’s purpose is to help children
with special needs from ages 3 to 17 participate in after school, childcare and preschool coun- tywide. It provides onsite inclusion support, family support services, staff training and indi- vidual assessment of children’s special needs.

Hope and Help Chris’s mom was concerned about the
long summer coming up. Could she find a pro- gram that would take her autistic child? Her hope was to find someplace that would keep him safe and out of trouble. When she found the YMCA Inclusion program, she discovered
so much more than she ever expected. Today Chris is happy and learning skills in
an environment that would not be possible without the help of a skilled aide. Instead of being sheltered behind closed doors, he is tak- ing advantage of social opportunities offered to typical children in a happy, positive environ-
ment with specially trained facilitators to pro- vide help and support to both Chris and his family.
There are over 8,000 autistic and Downs
Syndrome children in Orange County, and at least 100 new cases are reported monthly to the YMCA Community Service Branch. This is a
special needs children and families in need are in short supply in Orange County, ironically one of the wealthiest counties in California. The YMCA is striving to correct this with its Inclusion program. The Inclusion philosophy holds that every
child deserves the opportunity to become a strong, healthy and hope-filled member of the community. To this end, specially trained facil- itators work with parents and teachers to devise the best ways to work with children that need a little extra help.
