Watch Your Back! Taking Care in the Garden


The nation’s gardeners are coming out of the woodwork as the gardening season sets in. Thousands of people visit chiropractors each month with gardening related injuries including back pains, shoulder sprains and more.


Dyer St Chiropractors has identified some helpful solutions that you can incorporate to help you get through those garden tasks safely.With that in mind here are a few tips to ensure you don’t fall victimto a gardening injury!


1.Warmup before by going to for a brisk walk and do some light stretches. We recommend lying on your back and gently pulling both your knees up to your chest, feeling a light stretch across the small of you back.


2.Break up the work. Don’t try to get it all done in one go. Alternate between tasks to


stop joints and muscles from getting over worked. Try weeding for 20 minutes then pruning for 20 minutes. Then getting up and having a walk and a stretch. Think ‘little and often’.


3.Tools. Invest in some light-weight long handled gardening to minimise bending


4.Kneel. You can try putting a pad under your knees for comfort, but avoid bending from the back at all costs. If you have to bend, use the hips and keep your spine straight.


5.Lifting. If you have to lift something heavy, squat down, and hug the object close to your body to reduce back strain.


6.Stay Hydrated, especially when the weather is hot. Take a water bottle with you for ease. Aimfor at least a glassful every hour.
