Cirencester’s First World War Commemorations


Many events are planned this year in Cirencester to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War involving all age groups and various local organizations.


A commemorative programme has been produced with the help of Heritage Lottery Funding, Cirencester Community Development Trust & the Bingham Library Trust. The booklet will be widely distributed to households in Cirencester during the next two weeks. Additional copies may be obtained after 17th April from the Local Information Centre at Bingham House, 1 Dyer Street, the Corinium Museum and New Brewery Arts.


The venues for many events and activities will be the Parish Church, the Corinium Museum and New Brewery Arts.


Although major events will be focused around the time of the start of WW1 in August, some


exhibitions and displays will begin earlier. Entries for the WW1 Poetry Competition organized by the Friends of Cotswold Volunteers will close at the end of April and the winners of this and of a similar competition


organized in the by


Cirencester Kingshill School will be invited to read their poems at a commemorative concert


Parish Church on 8th August. The concert will also feature songs and music of the period performed by MJ-


UK Music and Arts.


To date groups planning events include the Corinium Museum, New Brewery Arts, Friends of Cirencester Parish Church, Friends of Cotswold Volunteers, Cirencester Philharmonia, Cirencester Deer Park School, Cirencester Kingshill School, Cirencester Library, Cirencester Archaeological & Historical Society, Cirencester Charter Market, the Society of Friends (Quaker), Cirencester RBL and Cirencester School of Acting.
