Cirencester Scene Magazine - Supporting Local Businesses - Buy Locally! A419 Noise Action

Group Latest News Since 2012, a group of residents and councillors have been working to reduce noise pollution from the A417/419. Calling ourselves A419NAG (Noise Action Group) we come from parishes and towns stretching from Bagendon to the north, Cirencester in the middle and Latton to the south.

Now, we have released figures showing that a large amount of money has gone to Road Management Services (Gloucester) Ltd, the company which maintains the 32 mile highway.

Figures show that this company received a total of £285 million from the Government from 1996 to 2013. This was part of the contract agreed when the road was built and is based on a ‘shadow toll’ for every vehicle using the road. It is estimated that the company will receive at least another £200 million until the agreement ends in 2026.

Road Management Services have confirmed that they spend between £1 and £1.5 million a year on maintaining the road, excluding management costs.

We believe the figures show that cash is available to reduce the noise.

Surely a small part of this eye popping £285 million can be spent on reducing the noise? It is a reasonable thing to ask.

Finally, we are currently producing a report, detailing the responses of 500 residents who have completed a survey on the impacts of noise pollution. We aim to publish this in the early summer.

Support for XP: survival tips

In our new monthly technology column, local computer tutor Fiona Brook-Fairfax answers the pressing questions.

Q: Help! A lot of my friends have said to me that my old trusted Windows XP will not be supported as of April 2014. Should I be worried?

A: Yes and no. It is true that as of the 8thh April Microsoft is stopping support for Windows XP after 13 years. This means there will be no more automatic updates or security ‘patches’. This doesn’t however mean your computer will stop working (!) –after all, it’s had updates for over a decade, so it will continue to look and work just as it always has.

However it won’t be as up to date as it could be and you could be open to ‘newer’ security flaws in the future. The best advice is to upgrade to the latest operating system, Windows 8, for around £80, or Windows 7, although the latter is increasingly hard to find! Newer is not always better, but in this case it is certainly safer!

Fiona Brook-Fairfax is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Cirencester area. She can come to your home for 1:1 lessons on any device and for any topic; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges are £35 per hour including trainingmaterials.
