Cirencester Scene Magazine - Supporting Local Businesses - Buy Locally! Cirencester Town Walks
Did you know 100 years ago this year a soldier from our area won a Victoria Cross? Well, if you look at the bottom left-hand corner of the list of the engraved names on the Church Porch next to the War Memorial in the Market Square in Cirencester you’ll see “John F P Butler VC DSO” recorded. He died in 1916 in the trenches, but he won his VC before the First World War serving in the Cameroons in 1914.
If you want to learn more about the town and its inhabitants then join us for a Town Walk. Many more such snippets of our 2000 year history will be revealed on the way round the 70 minute walk with a guide from the Cirencester Civic Society. Hear about the Roman beginnings, the foundation of the Abbey in 1115, the terrible events on a very cold February morning in 1643 when the Civil War hit the town and nearly a third of the population was killed, and much more. Find out how the buildings we see today fit into our history and hear of some of the notable characters who achieved so much for the town and our nation.
The walks are provided from May to September on every Sunday and Bank Holiday at 3pmoutside the Church Porch. In July and August we often add walks on Wednesdays and Saturdays – see latest details on the Society website [
ccs.org.uk ]. These are un-booked; you just turn up and join the group. We ask £2 per adult for Society funds, the guides are volunteers. You can also book walks, at any time of the year during daylight hours, for groups by contacting Williamat
coordinator@cirencestertownwalks.co.uk or by ringing 01285 88 55 90.
If you are not able to join a walk there is a self- guided Town Walk booklet available at the Town Information Point, the Tourist information Centre and Waterstones or direct from Williamas above.
