Laura Diakow

Laura Diakow used her wish to travel to Ireland for the Dublin Horse Show.

Laura Diakow is currently looking for the perfect graduation dress. Something that had become an uncertainty four years ago.

Laura was going home from church with her family in 2008 when she noticed a lump on her neck. Her parents took her to the emergency room for X-rays. It wasn't 20 minutes after they'd been home that the hospital called and said they were flying Laura to Calgary. It was there she was diagnosed with cancer at 13. After further tests doctors discovered that Laura had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, with a spot under her breastbone, in each of her lungs and the lymph nodes in her neck.

"They put me on four rounds of aggressive chemo because I had stage four, the most advanced stage. I had never had any symptoms except the lump on my neck. It was scary because we had no idea what I had for five days, they kept talking about all this stuff I'd never heard of before."

It wasn't long until the Diakow family was approached by Donna Serr with Children's Wish. Laura's mom, Erica, worked in school library with Donna who suggested the family apply for a wish.

Laura knew just what she wanted... to go to one of the world's biggest horse shows.

Ever since her uncle bought her a rocking horse at age one, Laura has been hooked on horses. She has been riding and jumping for 10 years now.

Children's Wish allowed Laura and her family, dad Adam, mom Erica, and sister Emily to travel to Ireland for the Dublin Horse Show in July 2009.

They toured the town of Queenstown, originally Cobh, the last stop Titanic made before it sank. As a history buff Laura enjoyed seeing the exhibits.

"We went to Blarney Castle and kissed the Blarney Stone which was awesome," Laura smiles. After Laura was declared cancer-free in February 2009 the trip was a nice relaxing way for the family to share some happiness.

"I met Beezie Madden, a world class show jumper and it was amazing to get tips from her. I saw her again at Spruce Meadows and she recognized me which was really cool."

Laura is now been cancer-free for four years, but still goes to Calgary once a year to the survivor clinic. After graduation she plans to go to school to be a veterinary technician. ■
