“Our oldest son felt bad about being at home, playing games on his computer while some of his classmates and friends were trying to save their homes,” said Meilleur via email in January. “He came up to us to say ‘I want to help, I'll go with or without you.’”

Meilleur and his wife had already planned to help out.

The Meilleurs began helping by sandbagging at the water utility plant, as they felt it would be an important area to save first. The next day, they went to the Shaw warehouse and helped out there until they ran out of sandbags. Then they went to a landscaping company in town to help people fill their bags.

“I recall one family working to save the family business: Grandpa, his son and wife, and four very young children under the age of six,” he said. “My wife, two sons, Kim Johnston and I jumped into action and helped fill two vehicles full of sandbags in a little over an hour, where the family would have probably needed the whole day.”

“The next day, we heard that the Medicine Hat SPCA had received almost all the pets from the affected areas and they needed food. We quickly went to PetSmart and bought a large quantity of food and delivered it to the SPCA. That's when we learned that the "regulars" (the animals that were in the shelter before the flood)

were in need of dog walkers because the staff had their hands full trying to care for all the city's pets. We walked dogs for two more days after that. It was an amazing experience for myself and my family.”

Meilleur said he felt there was no excuse for him and his family to not help during the flood.

“I was on holidays, my house was completely safe from the flood zone, the kids were home from school because of the flooding,” he said. “It was important for us to show our two boys that giving back to the community is the right thing to do, regardless of religious affiliation, race, political ideology, or social/ economic standing.”

Meilleur is still in contact with several friends he made during his time in the city, and agrees with the sentiment Ottenbriet shares about how helpful the community is.

“From what we've seen, Medicine Hat comes together as well as any other Canadian city when it comes to times of disaster,” he said. “Being a military family, we've lived across Canada and loved every posting we've had. We are extremely fortunate to represent Canada abroad and are happy to have called Medicine Hat home.” ■
