A question I am often asked, well lets break that question down a little and see, we have; An historical private members club, but not as private as it used to be, One Bar/Restaurant, One Pub/Sports bar , Three Cafe’s, Three Coff ee Shops, Six Restaurants , Three Fast Food Outlets. And more to come as development continues to expand. There is also an abundance of Retail outlets both traditional and boutique style, who are always making the shopping experience a thing to enjoy and lets not forget the three gym’s for those of us who like to stay in shape and if you like to adorn yourself with body art a choice of three tattoo parlours. Combine all that with a large thriving Professional Business community and all this does help to make DOWNTOWN a one stop destination and a hell of a day out. We are also lucky to have (arguably) the Oldest working cinema In Canada,
Theatre was recently upgraded with a state of the art digital projector and sound system, so you can now enjoy that old world luxury while enjoying

the most recent blockbuster movies on screen. A world class arts and heritage center in the ESPLANADE which draws world class shows year round and along with the ART GALLERY and MUSEUM that also brings in world class exhibitions, you are never at a loss for somewhere to visit when Downtown in Medicine Hat. To carry on there is also a PUBLIC LIBRARY that not only houses books, CD’s and DVD’s but has always got many other special events and activities on the go. Between City Hall and the Law courts you will find a giant chess board which was officially certified as the World’s Largest Chess Set by the Guinness World Records group in 2009. During the summer months you can actually play a game on this board, a must for all chess buffs. We also have two beautiful parks the first one, RIVERSIDE VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK is Located along 1st Street and 6th Avenue SE, across from the Medicine Hat City Hall, this formal park offers relaxation next to the South Saskatchewan River. Flowerbeds brighten the area and an interesting band shell adorned
with a mural created by local artist Jim Marshall, provides cover for entertainers. The mural depicts Medicine Hat's history starting with the First Nations, CPR, paddleboats, natural gas discoveries, and continues into our modern age. A Blue Heron, also created by Jim Marshall, adorns the entranceway to Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park. This band shell is frequently used by local bands and groups. In September of this year we will also have an open air concert from the world renowned British Military Band, The BAND of the WELSH GUARDS. Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park is also home of the Cenotaph, two CPR locomotives, and a World War II tank. All create a unique effect, overlooking trails that lead out of the Downtown core and onto Strathcona Island and Lions Park. The second much smaller park BATUS PARK is situated on the corner of 2nd Street and 6th Avenue; this was dedicated to show the bond that has grown between the City of MEDICINE HAT and the BRITISH ARMY TRAINING UNIT at CFB SUFFIELD. A nice place to have a picnic and

it does house a SPEAKERS CORNER, so you can always go there and hopefully draw a crowd to listen to what you have to say! Between March and November there is always some activity or event going on in the DOWNTOWN core, either put on by the CITY CENTER DEVELOPMENT AGENCY or other local agencies, groups or the stakeholders themselves. The CCDA account for the EASTER EGG HUNT, CHILI COOK-OFF, ROOFTOP ROUNDUP PARTY and MIDNIGHT MADNESS, and possibly some surprises this year, stay tuned! Also SPECTRUM a long week end aff air is housed in the downtown core, so much to do so much to see. So when I am asked the question “So what does downtown Medicine Hat have to offer”? I always start my response with, “do you have time for a coffee this could take awhile”! Have a great year and say hello when you
