Mayor Martin Shields grew up in Lethbridge, Alta. After graduation from high school, Shields completed his post-secondary education in Edmonton, Calgary and San Diego, with a Bachelor of political science, Bachelor of education and Masters in public administration.

In 1976, Shields was attracted to the City of Brooks for a teaching position. He says the then town was a great size and a nice community. He has now been retired from teaching for 10 years.


Shields began his third term as mayor after winning at the ballots in the October 2013 Municipal Election. This term, now four years in duration, he says he is focused on the economic development in the city, completion of the Field House, as well as the lighted ball parks — a few of the things on his list to improve Brooks' touristic qualities.

Shields believes Brooks is a dynamic community for which he is humbled to be chosen as mayor.
