River Flats residents optimistic for future of 'the gem of the city'

The issue of the River Flats neighbourhood and its future has been affecting the city for a number of years.

In 2006, a committee of diverse people was convened to help discuss the future of the neighbourhood. This stakeholder group included residents of the neighbourhood, business owners in the neighbourhood and people concerned about the legacy of the neighbourhood.

Bev Botter was on the committee. She has been a longtime resident of the neighbourhood, currently living in the house she grew up in, which was built in 1942.


“It’s a beautiful little house,” she said in an interview in January. “I’m quite committed to living in the neighbourhood,

not only because of the historical fact, but because my grandparents grew up there, so I have that family connection.”


She added, “I really got involved in the committee, because I really couldn’t stand what was going on with the community,” referring to the development of homes which didn’t reflect the culture of the neighbourhood.


Botter loves a number of things about the neighbourhood. She loves the gardens people grow in their yards, she loves the trees and she loves the walkability of the neighbourhood and its close proximity to two parks.


“We refer to it as the gem of the city,” she said.


Mark Dumanowski also calls the neighbourhood home, and has many

positive things about living there.


“The area just offers everything you could want in a residential area,” he said. “First of all, you have a lot of character homes, a lot of interesting buildings, which is an attractive feature for the area.”


He got involved in the stake because of his interested in the community.

Malcolm Sissons, president of I-XL Brick, was another member of the group. He was operating at the eastern edge of the neighbourhood and had a significant interest in the future of the area.
