80 2014 REPORT ON SOUTHEAST ALBERTA (403)-488-3972
When their son Ebin was two, Sarah and Adam noticed he was bruising quite often and seemed to have flu-like symptoms. One night after pulling him out of the tub Sarah noticed he had tiny pinprick bruising all over his legs. After phoning her mom, who is a nurse, and checking the Internet, the couple was prepared for the worst. Soon after, Ebin was diagnosed with leukemia and admitted to Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.
The couple said the diagnosis took a toll on the family. Ebin's older sister, Abree, now five, had never spent a night away from her parents, but was now spending countless hours at different grandparents. Since Ebin was now immune compromised due to his treatment he couldn't run the risk of getting sick. This meant that even a sniffle could keep Abree from her brother.
The family had months of turbulence, but Adam said Ebin made is easier for them to handle.
"He's energetic and really happy. Ebin doesn't understand cancer, he just knows if he feels good or bad."
Now through the hard part Ebin, now three-and-a-half, is currently on his last 14 months of maintenance treatments. He stills takes chemotherapy in the pill form, but only has to go to the Alberta Children's Hospital once a month for blood-work and once every three months for bone marrow samples.
"Every time we have to go to Calgary we're a little anxious, but Ebin always runs in and says hi to everyone," Sarah says.
The family was contacted months ago by Donna when one of their friends suggested Ebin for a wish.
"We were blown away at first. When we heard they wanted to give him a wish we were like 'no, give it to someone else'," Sarah says, but Children's Wish never turns down wishes.
The family is set to fly to Disney World in the beginning of April. A way of celebrating what the family has gone through and rewarding both of their children for being so great during this tough time.
"I guess it's a way to reward Ebin and Abree for getting through a hard part in their lives, something they can't even really grasp onto," says Adam. ■
