This is what Donna Serr does best, takes care of children.
When her own daughter, Melanie got sick at age 16, the Serr family was thrust into the world of families fighting for their children's lives. Melanie was diagnosed with a brain tumour and faced the struggle of battling cancer in her teens. A family friend tried to make it easier, submitting their name to Children's Wish. This decision would change their lives.

Children's Wish grants a child, three to 17, with a life-threatening illness any wish they desire. Melanie's wish was to go to Italy, a trip she had previously missed because of a surgery. Donna says the trip was amazing for the entire family to experience, bringing some joy into their lives. However, when they returned home Melanie's fight continued. Recognized for her kindness and her angelic singing voice, Melanie became known for her struggle and her fund-raising album, Surrounded, released in 1998. Melanie would grow to marry Kevin Ferguson in 2001 and have three children, Micah, Levi and Jirah.
Donna says Jirah is very special to her. Melanie was pregnant with Jirah when the cancer really began to take its toll. Eventually effecting her mobility and overall health. Her pregnancy with Jirah changed the type of treatment Melanie
