Junior Chamber quizkids all set for busy year
Junior Chamber Although the year end can be a quieter time for the Junior Chamber, there were some notable happenings towards the end of 2013. Firstly, we teamed up with our charity partners, With Kids, to stage a pub quiz in Merchant Square. The event was well attended, raising £400 for the With Kids Christmas Appeal. The quiz was very competitive with “Team Mon’O’Tom” just pipping the “With Kids Girls” to victory by half a point. Special thanks to O’Neill’s Irish pub for providing the venue, Fenwick Fine Foods for donating the prize, Scott Johnston for performing the quizmaster duties, Maggie Georgopolis for devising the fiendishly tricky

questions that so confounded the teams and Tom Widdows for helping to organise the event. Secondly, we held our AGM in December at
which a new Board was elected for 2014. This year’s Chairman will be myself – Neil Jordan. The other Board members are Lauren Murray, Alistair Stewart, Tom Widdows, Nadeem Sarwar and Marcus Mueller. Tom was deservedly awarded Most Outstanding Member in 2013.
Last year proved to be a very fruitful one for the Junior Chamber. There were many highlights, some of which were reported in this magazine. Thanks to Immediate past Chairman Lauren
Murray’s hard work, we have a strong foundation upon which to build this year and there is a lot to look forward to. We have the privilege of hosting the JCI Scotland National Conference in April and that’s just the beginning.
ADVERTORIAL FAST-TRACKING INTO RENEWABLES
West College Scotland has launched a series of new training programmes designed to fast-track people into the rapidly expanding renewables sector. Te programme supports the findings of a
recent survey by Scotish Renewables, which found that more than half of companies working in the renewable energy sector in Scotland are looking to hire staff this year (source: Scotish Renewables survey January 2014). Te survey also identified a number of skills gaps in the industry, including a lack of qualified engineers and technicians.
Te college is currently running four fully
funded courses under the programme, with more likely to follow over the coming months. Courses include BPEC Solar PV with Renewable Energy Awareness, Domestic Energy Assessor with IOSH Working Safely and BPEC Green Deal Advisor with Awareness of Environment Technologies. Andrew Fogarty, Head of Energy and
Utilities at the College, said: “Tese courses are ideal for individuals and employees who are looking to upskill or make their existing skills transferrable to the energy sector.
“People who may be interested include
those who are under-employed, employees on notice of redundancy and recent graduates. Given the low percentage of female workers in the industry, we are delighted to have signed up some female candidates and hope to atract more in future.”
