BOOST YOUR GREEN CREDENTIALS BY USING THE SUBWAY

Scotland is aiming to make a 42 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 and businesses are under the most pressure to achieve that goal. Te way we travel to work

and to meetings can be a significant contributor to rising emissions, and is costly to boot. One way of tackling that is

to make your staff aware of easy and convenient public transport methods and encourage them to use alternatives to cars. Te Subway is an ideal

solution for anyone working in and around Glasgow. Te introduction of the new Subway Smartcard makes it even quicker and easier for commuters. Anyone unable to walk to stations can take

advantage of Park and Ride sites at Bridge Street, Kelvinbridge and Shields Road. Te roll-out of Smartcards

to Subway Park and Rides is also under way – making journeys seamless. One commuter said: “I use

the Park and Ride because I need the car to drop my children at school, but I can then avoid taking my car into the city centre. It is good value, quick and easy. “I’m looking forward to

using my Smartcard for parking and travel too.”

responsibility for North America, Alistair Burt MP. Te opening of a New York

campus in the SoHo district – follows the launch of GCU London in 2010. Professor Pamela Gillies, the

Principal and Vice-Chancellor of GCU, said: “Tis is an exciting period in GCU’s history and we are delighted to be at the vanguard of Scotland’s and Britain’s contribution to enterprise, innovation and learning in one of the great cities of the world.”

Hard Rock Café strikes a chord

Glasgow’s Hard Rock Cafe opened in November and is already making a splash in the city. The Glasgow outlet on Buchanan Street on the site of the former Athenaeum Theatre is the 139th Hard Rock Cafe and joins other venues around the world. Like others in the chain,

the Glasgow outlet hosts rock memorabilia including Sir Elton John’s shoes. Memorabilia from Scottish stars includes items from Alex Harvey, the Bay City Rollers,

KT Tunstall, Amy Macdonald and Primal Scream. The venue hosts indoor and

outdoor dining areas with a Rock Wall Solo, an interactive touch wall with technology that allows diners to virtually tour other Hard Rock Cafes around the world and explore the items they have on show. It also hosts a music stage

that will feature live weekly music events and a Rock Shop selling Hard Rock Café T-shirts and other merchandise.

MTV win mean £10m boost for businesses

The decision to host the MTV Europe Music Awards in Glasgow could be worth about £10 million to local businesses, according to Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau. Up to a billion people around the globe will tune in to the event in November, and will draw the world’s top performing artists, about 1,400 technicians and staff and around 60 trucks to build the show. Mr Taylor said: “The global

reach of MTV has a TV audience of between 700 million and a billion people. The digital reach

is enormous. Even if we are just talking about Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus – they have a combined following of 40 million people. “If they come to Glasgow and

they start tweeting and Facebooking about the city, that is the kind of reach and impact that we can have.” Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive

of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is a fantastic result that cements our reputation as one of the world’s great music cities, and is the outcome of many months of hard work by the City Marketing Bureau and Event Scotland.”
