Students with disabilities s are more vulnerable to be abused than their non-disabled peers. Learn how a child’s age, disability and vulnerability are a major factor to predators and what you as a transportation professional can do to identify and potentially prevent criminal action takenl against our most vulnerable school bus passengers. The sharing of information is vital for the safety and well-being of students with disabilities in your care. Scenarios will be presented for you to learn from actual events that have taken place on a school bus.


Case Study on Transportation Consolidations Presenter: Debbie Rike With budget cuts across nearly all school districts, this session will discuss district consolidations as an option to save money. This has a direct impact on students with special needs. Hear from the retired transportation director for Shelby County (Tenn.) Schools, which last year merged with nearby Memphis Public Schools.


The Changing Face of Special-Ed Technology Presenter(s): John Benish, Pete Meslin and Launi Schmutz-Harden Spiderman (and Voltaire) famously said: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Some amazingly powerful technologies have recently gained wider use in school transportation for students with disabilities. These tools have the potential to vastly improve both the safety and efficiency with which we provide service. However, technology can only be maximized if we choose the right technologies to meet our needs and we create effective procedures to utilize them. This session will survey the myriad established and emerging technologies while providing direction for how to successfully integrate them into your transportation department operation.


Documentation to Support Transportation in the Least


Restrictive Environment Presenter(s): Pete Meslin and Susan Shutrump Transportation provides the link to true community access for many students with special needs. Therefore, it is vital that, to the extent possible, students are taught to navigate within their community as independently as possible and in the least restrictive manner. This process starts on the school bus. In this session, participants will learn how to support this skill acquisition through team planning with an emphasis on least restrictive options. Documentation of plan implementation, success and/or retooling will be discussed along with who, when and what needs to be recorded.


Fit for Duty: Organizational Behavior for Health Presenter(s): John Benish, Kenny Mulder and Alex Robinson An organization with good leadership and is structurally sound is a healthy and productive place where work and passion go hand in hand. This workshop will help participants understand how this type of organizational behavior is accomplished.


Turn Your Transportation Department into a Revenue


Generating Engine (SNT 106) Presenter(s): Theresa Anderson and Todd Zoelick Doing more with less is the transportation creed, so are you utilizing all of your resources? Many of us have a vastly underutilized resource which many of our students are entitled to; Medicaid reimbursement. This is federal program that many students are entitled to receive. There have been many discussions reviewing the “need to know” of Medicaid, so this session will put the theory to practice. If you are unsure of the process or perhaps need tips on how to start or improving your program, this is the session for you.


Problem-Solving: Five W’s That Help to Direct the Process Presenter: George Horne By nature, transporters and educators must be problem-solvers. But when is a “problem” really a problem? How did a specific situation get to be a problem in the first place? Join in a discussion about strategies for identification, application, resolution and prevention in dealing with “problems.”


Self-Assessment Evaluation as a Tool for Performance


Improvement Presenter: Debbie Rike Among the many reasons to evaluate staff is the opportunity to determine individual skills needing improvement. Evaluation allows excellent employees to know they are valued. It provides information and assists in determining which operational areas would benefit from additional training. Whenever staff is allowed to participate actively in the evaluation process, the improvement results can be maximized.


We’d Never Do That: Unintentional Discrimination in


Transportation of Students with Disabilities (SNT 106) Presenter(s): Peggy Burns and George Horne We’ll discuss the ways in which we can unintentionally create barriers to educational opportunities — the very opposite of the “equal access” to such opportunities that we intend to create. We’ll discuss ways to avoid potentially discriminatory practices that negatively impact the educational experience.

When Your Attendants Let You Down: Problems, Solutions and


Preventive Measures Presenter: Peggy Burns Court cases and administrative hearings often center on the actions — or inactions — of attendants. It seems that, despite the necessity of assignment of an attendant when necessary to meet the needs of a student with a disability, these important members of the transportation team can create problems instead of serving students. In this interactive session, we’ll explore the types of issues that arise and examine potential solutions.


Win or Lose: Elements of a Successful Administrative Hearing Presenter: Peggy Burns The likelihood of success of an administrative hearing depends, to a great extent, on the strength of your position going into the hearing. We’ll discuss elements that bode well for the hearing outcome, and risks to be avoided before you ever get to the hearing stage.
