NAVISTAR: ORDERS OF IC BUSES WITH CUMMINS ISB ENGINES REMAIN STRONG

bout 1,500 IC Bus school bus- es were ordered since parent company Navistar announced in September it was tapping Cummins ISB 6.7-liter diesel engines that use SCR to reduce emissions, the company said on Dec. 23.

A Te announcement centered

mostly on the first shipments of Navistar’s DuraStar work truck. Company officials said 4,500 of those units had been ordered to date. Last month, IC Bus was set

to begin actual production of its CE Series Type C school bus equipped with the ISB. “Te response from our customers and dealers has been tremendous, and I think that’s a

real testament to the product,” IC Bus President John McKinney told STN. IC buses will also continue to be manufactured this year with customer options for Navistar’s MaxxForce 7 and MaxxForce DT diesel engines that use EGR.

FMCSA AMENDS RULE REQUIRING CDL DRIVERS TO SELF-REPORT MEDICAL CERTIFICATION

Te Federal Motor Carrier Safety Admin-

istration announced Jan. 10 that commercial drivers must continue to carry paper copies of their medical certifications for another year — until Jan. 30, 2015 — but clarified that drivers were still required to certify by the end of last month, according to the agen- cy’s deputy director, Duane DeBruyne. Tis means commercial drivers had

to certify their status (e.g., interstate or intrastate, exempt or non-exempt) with the State Driver License Agency by Jan. 30 and to provide the SDLA a copy of any new medical certificate received after Jan. 30, 2012. Te amended rule applies to holders

of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or commercial learner’s permit (CLP). Drivers who do not adhere to this requirement are subject to losing their CDL privileges. Te FMCSA was forced to push back

the deadline to Jan. 30, 2015, because some states failed to adequately notify drivers and/or to upgrade their information systems to allow the integration of medical certifi- cation data into the Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS) online database. Since Jan. 30, 2013, drivers have been required to report their operating status and provide medical certificates when renewing their CDL.

Utah Lawmaker Wants to Help Fund Bus Replacement Program

R

ep. Steve Handy announced plans to introduce a bill in the 2014 session that would appropriate $13 million for a bus replacement program, which would enable school districts to switch to alternative fuels. Handy said he also plans to ask the legislature for another $7 million to build the

infrastructure and to retrofit bus shop to accommodate the fuel systems, according to the Standard-Examiner. Tis legislation comes on the heels of an announcement made by Gov. Gary Herbert that his 2015 fiscal year budget has a planned appropriation of $14 million for the bus replacement plan. Herbert said the legislation would allow districts, using a 50-50 match, to replace as many as 170 old school buses in the 2015 fiscal year.
