Behavior Manifestations and Interventions: The 3-D Effect of

Drivers, Parents and Children Presenter: Kathleen Furneaux The behavior of students diagnosed with a behavior disorder is difficult to understand, and at times outbursts even seem intentional. The possible objectives change depending on what your perspective is – the driver, parent or the student. Each perspective will be discussed to allow greater appreciation for their individual agendas. This workshop will explain the dynamic of the manifest behaviors and offer suggestions for intervention.

Best of the Best: Tips from Safety Trainers Presenter: George Horne Like an elegant meal, training should be nourishing, flavorful and temptingly presented. Learn techniques to select training menus, add appropriate ingredients and present your materials tastefully and uniquely.

Beyond Pizza and Politics: Best Ideas for IEP Team Building Presenter(s): Dianna Gates and Kala Henkensiefken Transportation is a vital part of every student’s day, and it is especially important when it is listed as a related service on an IEP. Do you get frustrated because you are always the last to know? Are you a part of your district’s IEP team?

Common Interest, Common Goals: How Head Start and

Special Needs Transporters Can Learn from Each Other Presenter(s): Diane Clinkscales, Debbie Rike, Michelle Saavedra, Launi Schmutz-Harden and Todd Zoelick What are the similarities and differences between Head Start and special needs transportation? Customizing Evacuation Plans for Students

with Special Considerations Presenter(s): Kathleen Furneaux and Susan Shutrump Individualizing evacuation plans for students with special needs takes strong teamwork by those who can best predict how the student may react and what they might need during this stressful event. Effective plans take into account the student’s abilities as well as their needs while considering the “whole” child – their communication, behavior, physical development, medical status, ability to process sensory information, and cognitive abilities. To bring the plan to life, an honest evaluation of the physical ability of the staff to execute the plan must be considered. This session will explore each of these areas as well as their impact on the evacuation process to give guidance on customizing effective evacuation plans for students with special needs.

Do’s and Don’ts of Wheelchairs on Buses and Lift Safety Presenter(s): Dianna Gates and Susan Shutrump Safe transport of students who use wheelchairs involves following basic safety principles dictating what to do and what not to do. In this session, we will discuss these principles beginning from the moment students board the bus using the wheelchair lift through to how to tie down the wheelchair and safely restrain the passenger with use of the shoulder-lap belt. Customizing transportation plans to deal with challenging chair types and special accessory equipment will also be discussed.

Interventions When Transporting Older Students with Autism

and Bi-Polar Disorder Presenter: Mark Deschaine Providing effective and evidence-based interventions while transporting older students with autism and/or bipolar disorders can be challenging and daunting. While no one intervention works consistently for all students with special needs, there are a number of supports that have been found to increase your ability to meet the needs of these students who exhibit challenging behaviors.

Managing Behaviors (SNT 105) Presenter: Theresa Anderson This course takes an in-depth look at behavior management strategies that work with students of all ages. The emphasis is on best practices for supporting a safe school bus environment by utilizing effective behavior management strategies for a variety of different disability populations. In order to receive credit, participants will be required to complete a course-specific assignment.

Perplexing Cases on Mobility Issues Presenter(s): Dianna Gates, Charley Kennington and Susan Shutrump Do you have a difficult case that, despite trying everything in your “bag of tricks,” just doesn’t seem to be managed effectively? Bring your problem to the group and let us solve it together! In this interactive session, we will work together to find possible resolutions to some of the most challenging and perplexing issues in dealing with transportation of students in wheelchairs or mobility devices.

Roundtable: Special Transportation Issue Dialogue Presenter(s): Peggy Burns and Cheryl Wolf Participants will have an opportunity to raise concerns and questions about transporting students with disabilities in an informal format. While the “presenters” will guide and moderate the conversation, roundtable is intended to be a free-flowing discussion in which all views are welcomed.

Shoulder-Lap Belts on School Buses: Implications for Correct

Fit and Use Presenter(s): Charley Kennington and Susan Shutrump In this session, a panel of manufacturers of bus seats with lap shoulder belts will discuss with Kennington and Shutrump the correct fit and use of their products. They will advise on strategies to include in driver training programs when taking into account the recent changes in the “lockability” requirements. Is it appropriate to use belt-positioning booster seats? Can other child safety seats be used on bus seats with shoulder lap belts and if so, how? How do we teach our youngest students to use shoulder lap belts on school buses? These are just a few of the important topics to be covered. Come and join in the discussion!

Who Said “What?” Presenter: Linda Bluth The purpose of this interactive session is to focus on real-life scenarios that may come up at any time. Innumerable questions may surface when there is an unexpected event that takes place on a school bus. There is nothing more overwhelming or threatening than being asked a unanticipated question in a public forum. This presentation will share with the audience industry questions that can come up at any time, and recommend responses and actions under challenging circumstances.
