CLARITY ON BEST PRACTICES Grappling to find efficiencies is challenging, and


some industry watchers wonder whether unrelenting budget cuts are being used as excuses to compromise integrity. Will there become a “new normal” that chips away at the “safety side?” Will wilting funds for pro- fessional development result in skirting best practices? Here are recent inquiries from concerned transportation staffers who worry that their superiors might not be following (or aren’t aware of) best practices: “I have voiced my concerns to my supervisors for a


student’s safety regarding a lift-related issue and may be overruled, so what is my liability (not to mention my conscience)?” And another: “We have bus aides and school aides


who are suctioning a young man at school and on the bus. Tere has been a question that this is not legal. Can you direct me? I do not want any of these people to get into trouble because this is what we are being told to do.” For technical answers to questions like these — pro-
