NHTSA Child Pasenger Safety Restraint Systems
on School Buses (SNT 102) Additional $199 fee required Presenter(s): Kala Henkensiefken, Charley Kennington, Sue Shutrump and Cheryl Wolf This course, based on NHTSA’s National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program, was developed specifically to address the unique issues of installing Child Safety Restraint Systems (CSRS) on school buses. It also supports the “Guideline for the Safe Transportation of Pre-school Age Children in School Buses,” developed by NHTSA in 1999, which recommends that preschool age children who are transported in school buses always be transported in properly secured CSRS. The intended audience are school bus drivers and monitors who transport pre- school age children as well as and bus mechanics who maintain CSRS. The participants may also include driver trainers, school officials, transportation directors, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school nurses and early intervention specialists. You may also want to invite school bus companies, distributors, and contractors.
GENERAL SESSIONS
If We Could Change Section 504, How Would We? Presenter(s): Linda Bluth, Peggy Burns and Pete Meslin Arguably, the emergence of costly litigation under Section 504 has been one of the most significant developments in education law in recent years. We’ll discuss why this is so and the practical implications of this fact. We’ll discuss ways in which changes to Section 504 might increase educational benefits to students while decreasing burdens on transportation and education professionals to meet trending legal demands and avoid risks.
Practictioners Meet the HR Guru Presenter(s): Pete Meslin and Craig Ott Very few school transportation administrators look forward to meetings with human resources or personnel department staff. Frequently those feelings are shared by our HR counterparts. Although we are there to support each other, far too often it feels like we don’t share common language, perspective, or objectives. This session will expose some of the underlying perceptions and biases we both bring to the table. You’re likely to see yourself in some of these lively skits and you’ll leave this session knowing what you need to do to improve the success of your interactions with your friends in HR.
Stepping Up: Leadership, Motivation, Mentoring and
Management (SNT 106) Presenter(s): John Benish, Mark Deschaine, Kala Henkensiefken, Alex Robinson, Elaine Shea and Cheryl Wolf An effective transportation professional needs to wear many hats simultaneously, providing a wide variety of supports at a moment’s notice. With little warning, they often must provide and engage in leadership, motivation, mentoring or management activities. This session will provide the perspectives of professionals who have lived and have supported each of these important issues. Come listen as they share their perspectives in this interactive discussion forum.
