GUTTRIDGE LTD PUBLISHES FIRST WHITE PAPER: ‘THE PRACTICALITIES
AND ECONOMICS OF DUST SUPPRESSION’ Guttridge Ltd, a company known for its expertise in bulk materials handling, has published its first white paper. ‘The practicalities and economics of dust suppression’ is an authoritative and practical guide for those tackling the critical issue of dust control during bulk material transfer. Jointly authored by Peter Guttridge, Chairman of Guttridge Ltd, and Ian Walton, from DSH Systems, a company that leads the world in innovative technology for dust suppression, the paper examines the HSE and economic issues associated with uncontrolled dust release, highlighting the capabilities of the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH). It is available as a free download from the Guttridge website at:
www.guttridge.co.uk/en/product/4/ dust-suppression-hopper The release of dust during bulk
material handling procedures such as outloading, the transfer of a feed or product to a lorry or tanker, is recognised as a significant operational hazard at many sites and ports. Associated health and safety issues range from air and water contamination to the potential for explosion. Economic penalties include lost product and the manual effort required for clean-up. Telescopic bellows are a traditional choice for bulk outloading but have a number of limitations. In the white paper, the authors
examine the mechanism of dust release during the transfer of granular materials and the issues it creates. The advantages and limitations of telescopic bellows technology are discussed and the operating principles of the DSH are introduced. By concentrating a discharging stream of granular material into a densified, solid-like column that draws in any fine material, the DSH suppresses dust release at source. Example calculations illustrate the potential benefits of this technology and how it can deliver a substantial return on investment, as well as eliminating HSE concerns.
FIRST CONTAINERISED INDIAN NON-GM SOYMEAL AVAILABLE
TO UK FEED SECTOR The first, fully sealed 20Mt containers of Cert ID Non GM certified Indian soymeal for the UK feed sector are now available through London based importers Gemcom Limited. Offering both standard grade and hipro
meal, Gemcom’s unique containerised solution offers the feed industry a convenient, fully traceable and cost effective alternative to sourcing non-GM product in bulk from Brazil - currently suffering well documented supply issues. Gemcom’s supply of Indian material is
produced, packed and sealed at source in 20Mt containers which remain sealed until they are discharged in the UK, to minimise the risk of cross contamination. The soymeal is then stored separately at strategically located stores around the UK. The availability of large quantities of
containerised Indian Cert ID certified non- GM soymeal shipments is aimed at feed companies who still wish to use non-GM material to meet renewed retailer demand for non-GM animal feed. India already has a
strong track record in supplying non GM soy to the UK food market and also supplies non GM to quality demanding markets such as Japan and Australia. Since GM soy has never been or
planned to be cultivated in India, users have reassurance from the start. The in-built non GM status of the Indian soymeal is further supported by robust independent certification against the industry-leading Cert ID Europe Non-GMO standard. Each delivery is fully forward traceable to a customer, with each batch of containers in turn tracked back to production, region or farm. Gavin Millar, Managing Director of GemCom Limited said: “The market has found new ways to
respond to alleviate the tight supply situation in Brazil exacerbated by export corridor bottlenecks and continued demand for Non- GM soymeal in the feed sector. Gemcom has applied its distribution knowledge and years of logistics expertise to achieve a level of traceability resolution zeroed down to 20Mt quantities directly from Cert ID certified Non-GM sources in India, something that has never been achieved before and on a volume scale”.
DSM RECEIVES EUROPEAN PATENT FOR USE OF CANTHAXANTHIN TO IMP ROV E B R E E D E R
PERFORMANCE Canthaxanthin is a nature-identical carotenoid which is produced by DSM. Its use in MaxiChick™ - DSM’s patented solution for boosting the productivity of breeder flocks - has likewise been granted in Brazil, China, Switzerland, Australia and Mexico. The European Patent Office has
confirmed DSM’s patent on the use of canthaxanthin and/or at least one vitamin D
and fertility and for lowering embryo mortality in poultry. Key to this is the enhancement of the antioxidant capacities of the egg. Carotenoids in the egg-yolk help neutralize harmful oxidative particles in the egg. These develop during the formation of the embryo and cause oxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the egg. Neutralizing the effects of these particles boosts the egg’s antioxidant capacity, thus enhancing the survival chances of the embryo. Breeder farmers have to manage many

different variables in the diet in order to maximize the productivity of their flocks. Under the leadership of Dr. Gilbert Weber, a group of DSM scientists investigated whether the addition of canthaxanthin to the diet might help. Their research showed that adding canthaxanthin does indeed improve egg hatchability, leading to increased breeder flock productivity. Substantiated by further university and field studies, these findings led to the development of DSM’s unique MaxiChick™ offering. MaxiChick™ combines the antioxidant
properties of canthaxanthin with the calcium- mediating action of Hy-D® metabolite. Hy-D®
