lowland grazing farms and a 33 per cent fall for LFA grazing livestock farms. Both these farm types failed to make a positive return from agriculture, reflecting the difficult conditions for beef and sheep farmers throughout the year. The lower exchange rate for the single payment was also seen to represent a noticeable reduction in receipts for these farm types. Incomes on mixed farms fell by nearly 50 per cent in 2012/13 to
around £38,000 (Table 1). Total farm output fell by almost a quarter with lower output across both crop and livestock enterprises. Total costs fell by around 15 per cent. Some of these differences are likely to be due to a slightly different sample compared to last year. This is because relatively small changes to cropping or stocking on farms that don’t have a strongly dominant enterprise (as these are) can result in individual farms switching designated farm types between years. Corresponding data for Wales was originally scheduled for
publication in November 2013 but was postponed as the result of ‘errors identified in the source data’. At the time of writing, no revised date of publication had been arrived at; the earlier data, published in February 2013, is shown in Table 2 to give some indication of the pressures on Welsh, largely livestock, farm incomes. Given the remarks above, the data collected should be treated with caution. Average Farm Business Income for ‘All Farm Types’ in Wales, although not shown in Table 2, show them decreasing by 29 per

cent, from £41,100 in 2011-12 to £29,000 in 2012-13, reversing the increase in average Farm Business Incomes experienced in Wales during 2011-12. The factors behind the expected decrease in income in 2012-13 are higher input costs and reduced output, especially sheep. In addition, changes in the £/€ exchange rate, set on 30 September, resulted in lower Single Payment receipts – down around 8 per cent on 2011-12. On dairy farms, a small increase in the value of output was offset
by an increase in input costs and a reduction in the average Single Payment; this resulted in a 21 per cent drop in average Farm Business Income from £66,100 in 2011-12 to £52,400 in 2012-13. On cattle and sheep farms in less favoured areas, lower lamb prices and a reduction in the number of animals marketed resulted in output values falling; this, coupled with rising input costs and reduced Single Payment receipts, resulted in a 37 per cent drop in average Farm Business Income, from £34,600 in 2011-12 to £21,700 in 2012-13. The same factors were estimated to have impacted on average incomes on Lowland Cattle and Sheep farms. As a result, estimated average Farm Business Incomes on Lowland Cattle and sheep farms is forecast to decrease 34 per cent from £35,300 in 2011-12 to £23,200 in 2012-13 [1]
