With autumn gone and winter well and truly here, the new wheat seed has only just been planted due to the substantial amount of rain we had at the start of winter. Surprisingly though it hasn’t been that cold and after just ten days in the soil the seed had germinated. It’s quite incredible how nature works. The fi elds are now starting to turn a pale sort of translucent green as the new shoots of wheat emerge from their brown soil beds to start their growing journey on their way to harvest time. Usually, if they are up and in line like army soldiers by Christmas or New Year then they stand a chance of providing a decent yield. This is because they will be strong enough to take on the diseases, fungal infections, slugs, rain and pestilence that await them in the spring and remain healthy enough to produce a yield. producing a yield we have introduced some new lines for this year and they too seem to be yielding extremely well. We have a new wood smoked oil and a tasty new range of 3 fruit vinegar vinaigrettes including Goosegog and elderfl ower, Raspberry and Blueberry and Basil. Oh yes, what a threesome of fl avours wrapped up in a box just ready to be enjoyed with a healthy salad or winter dish and great staples to have in the store cupboard too. It did amaze us though
on how many people did not know what we meant by Goosegog. Am I getting old? Was it only OUR mothers
that referred to the good old gooseberry as a Goosegog? Anyway, here’s to a happy, healthy start to the year.
