When I received a phone call from a franchisor who wanted to retain my marketing services the power of Twitter was brought home to me. He explained that one of his followers had re-tweeted one on my tweets in which I shared that my book, The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book, was still at Number 1 in the Amazon Charts. He read the tweet, followed the Amazon link, purchased my book and decided he wanted to retain me. There was no pitching or ‘getting to know you’ session. All from just one tweet! Now, whilst I am far from declaring myself a Twitter expert, I’ve managed to get some amazing results from Twitter. I’ve ‘met’ and connected with hundreds of my readers, sold thousands of books and found some great experts– on top of gaining new clients.


My Twitter strategy is straight forward and you can emulate it.


1. Start by making use of your Twitter bio. You’ve got 160 characters to convey just how interesting you are.


2. Be present on Twitter. You can over automate your tweets unwittingly believing that in doing so you’re being ultra effi cient. Make sure you’re joining in, responding to messages, retweeting tweets, sharing your expertise.

Invest time every day for Twitter. I don’t have a Twitter routine because my working days vary but I make sure that I check in three or four times a day, reading my messages, responding to messages and writing new tweets. Find your own daily routine so that tweeting

4. Follow interesting and knowledgeable people. You’ll learn from their expertise and, if they appreciate some of your tweets, they may retweet them to their followers which will extend your reach on social media.


5. Share your expertise generously but if you want your expert tweets to be retweeted in full restrict them to 130 characters.


6. Check each tweet before posting. Tweets full of txt talk and spelling mistakes are to be avoided if you want to build great reputation with your followers.


7. Be careful about what you tweet. A joke in poor taste, an outburst of temper does you a disservice. Imagine a client and hot prospect is looking over your shoulder. Will they like what they see?


8. Respond to your @messages promptly, especially when asked for help.


9. You’ll gain followers if you retweet messages that you appreciate but be extra thoughtful and condense these messages adding a few words explaining why you appreciated them. If you want someone to follow you, retweet their messages and ensure your tweets are interesting enough to encourage them to follow you back.


10. You can sell your services on twitter but know when to stop selling and start sharing and interacting.
