Over the last few weeks nursery children at St Mary’s have been having fun with language, inspired by a visit from Anita Govan the Stirling Makar.
Anita read a poem written by Spike Milligan called The Ning Nang Nong which we all found very funny and some of us painted and drew pictures about this. We played teapots and musical instruments to make the clang, bang, bong, jibber jabber joo sounds in the poem and filmed this using the iPad so that we could watch ourselves.
We read other poems by Spike Milligan including the Bumbly Boo and enjoyed poems and books brought from home.
A group of nursery children then dictated their own poem, ‘Animals’.
Animals The fluffy cat with the fluffy paws, stretches awake, It says “Meow”, that’s how cats talk.
The heavy horse gallops and skips in the field Its says “Neigh”, that’s how horses talk.
The lion prowls looking for food to eat, It says “Growl”, that’s how lions talk.
The monkey hangs from the tree, Swinging from the branches, It says “Ooo ooo ooo”, that’s how monkeys talk.
The dog chases the fluffy cat, it says “Woof, woof bark”, That’s how dogs talk.
The pig rolls in mud, and trots around looking for food, It says “Oink, oink”, that’s how pigs talk.
The snake slithers, makes trails and is dangerous, It says “Hiss”, that’s how snakes find food.
In October, P5-6 invited Geoff Cook from The Sherrifmuir Inn (or Geoff the Chef as we like to call him!) to do a cooking demonstration for us. We explained to him that we wanted to make a ‘meal in a bag’ for a local charity. He showed us that tasty, nutritious food does not have to cost a lot. He got a big bag of vegetables for under £2 and managed to use them to make 3 meals – a lentil dhal, stovies with oxtail and a rice pilaf. He demonstrated how to cook them as well.
Everybody got to taste his brilliant cooking and most people enjoyed what they tasted. He also told us about his job and what it is like to be a chef.
It is a brilliant job for people who
like to work on their own and independently. “It was really interesting how he kept cooking 3 meals and talking to us” said Sophie (P5). Alex, P5 thought it was amazing that he could cook 3 meals at once in under an hour. “We learned information such as lentils cook quicker if you soak them overnight” explained Orla (P6). Geoff was very nervous at the start because he prefers to work by himself in his kitchen, but at the end he said “I almost enjoyed it!” P5-6 are going to use what they learned from the cooking demonstration to try to create their own lentil dishes and we look forward to hearing what Geoff thinks of what we have made.
