In addition to key learning in numeracy and mathematics, children will be focusing on writing this term, while exploring the following contexts for learning:

P.1 - will be continuing their adventures in The Enchanted Forest then preparing for their nativity performance to parents and carers, backed by P.2 singers. P.2 – ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ P.3 – ‘Traditional Tales’ with a specific focus on Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime performance. P.4 – are on a ‘Journey to the South Pole’ leading to some festive imaginative writing. P.5 – are exploring Roald Dahl’s imaginative world of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ as a stimulus for their own creative stories. P.6 – are finding out about ‘The Unsinkable Ship’ (The Titanic) and using that stimulus to write in a variety of genres, in particular writing diaries. P.7 are researching children’s lives during WW11 as a stimulus for their own personal imaginative writing.

Newton Primary School

French Exchange We recently enjoyed visits and lessons from two French Exchange teachers from Lille, Stephanie Desreumaux and Marylene Montagne, who were also able to join our P.7 led Armistice Assembly. Coincidently one of the teachers lives near Flanders. Callum in P.7N explains, “P7s took charge of the assembly, to tell everyone about Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day, which is the 11th of November every year. The assembly featured an interview with Miss Poppy Scotland (Poppy, P7A), recitals of the poems ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘We Shall Keep The Faith’, an acrostic poem spelling out ‘Armistice Day’ and a video explaining the origins of the poppy. Everyone listened carefully.

Scottish Primary Schools’ Road Relay Championship Newton were able to put forward teams for the above event. Congratulations to our teams who were: P.7: Conall Stephen, Callum Valentine, Tom Spinks, Lizzie Stansfield, Ellee Mills, Isla O’Sullivan, Archie Lumsden, Nathan Tagg, Ben Ritch, Jenni Totten, Olivia Donald, Carrie Davidson P.6: Jenny Clark, Isla Price, Beth Elliot, Ruth Hughes, Rachel Ward, Isabel Bothwell, Ryan Deakin, Stuart Thomson, Hamish Burns, Matthew Meechan, Rory-Reid-Thomas
