Thrifty Table Settings... Home Styling Advice brought to you monthly by MHOR design

Christmas can be a magical time: long dark nights; the promise of snow;

roaring fi res

and the aroma of mulled wine. It’s the time of year when our homes take centre stage as we invite friends and family to join in the celebrations.

Part of the fun lies in transforming our homes for the season. There are essentially four decorative themes for Christmas - Traditional, Nordic, Winter Wonderland, & Contemporary. We cannot cover all themes in any detail in this article so given that this is an expensive time of year I am going to share a thrifty way to decorate your table, whatever your theme as you just need to change the colours. This whole table decoration cost just £13.18.

For the table I use a white table cloth (always) or if you don’t have a white table cloth use a white sheet! Add a runner in your chosen colour theme, for me this year its gold. (You can go to town here) I often buy a remnant of luxurious fabric in my chosen colour theme to use as a runner (fabric cost £2.50). I then visited the local charity shop (Mary’s Meals) and purchased 8 glasses costing £3, you may have some glasses already that will work! They can be the same or diff erent it doesn’t really matter small etched ones are better. I bought some votive candles (8 for 1.99 at Sainsbury’s) mine are cream but you can use the colour

associated with your theme. In every second glass place a votive then in every other glass place a fl ower to compliment your theme. This year I have gone for gold and white so I will use a white rose and some Alstroemeri the fl owers were reduced to 1.40 and 2.10 at Waitrose). I fi nish each glass off with coordinating curling ribbon to tie round each glass (99p Tesco). If you have these things around the house you don’t need to buy them, that all important reuse and recycle mantra!

Line them up along your table and voila you have a thrifty but beautiful table decoration. You can layer it with fi r cones, (mine were from the garden) and table confetti (the party shop 1.10) I spray the fi r cones to coordinate with the colour of the theme. As an alternative to Christmas crackers (I hate the waste) try small party favors (lip gloss, miniature of whiskey, nail polish etc) decorate with Christmas gift tags. I choose a quotation personal to my guest print it off and glue to the back of the gift tag. I put it at my guests’ seat so it doubles as a place name. This can be done weeks in advance.

I hope you have as much fun as I do at Christmas time playing around with decorations, remember you don’t have to spend a fortune to make it look good! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.
