The upside of being newly single.
It’s all about you now, and what you want to do
here is so much written about divorce that describes the misery of separation and all its consequences, but is it possible, that there is a real upside to it? Getting to lie diagonally across the bed and not having to use ear plugs to drown out snoring has got to be an advantage. Slurp your cereal without disapproving looks, and forget being irritated by the toothpaste being squeezed from the top. What about not having to see those boring ‘friends’ again with a rictus smile on your face. Then there are the plans you can make without the committee, the mess you can make and leave till the morning. How about dating again and it’s not infidelity? Christmas is coming, not having to put up with the in-laws or anyone that you are duty bound to see instead of want to see. Save on the postage and don’t send cosy Christmas cards, book a holiday and choose where you want to go for a change. Do all those things

you feel your ex held you back from. Find the inner you, the new you, the crazy free, different you. Sign up for some whacky evening classes, catch up with friends who had all but given up on you, take up a new sport or pursuit that you never imagined you would do. Get a pet, get rid of your pet. Meet new people, re-invent yourself, be in control of your own future and destiny and pursue it with full throttle. Take up flying – either a plane or a kite, climb Snowdon, go bungee jumping. Push yourself to your limits and realise that life is out there for the taking, just shake off the harness, take a deep breath and go for it. We can all let our history stop us from living and moving, but we can equally step out of our history and do the Cha Cha, just because we Can Can.
