Structural Repair

CONCRETE CRACK INJECTION WITH BETON BAUEN

Beton Bauen Ltd a UK specialist contractor, were contracted by the main contractor to seal and re-bond a structural concrete topping to the precast decks to each of the six levels of a multi-storey car park in Swindon. These problems are thought to be due to shrinkage and the cracks ranged from 0.5mm to 2mm in width and some ran straight through the topping.

When planning the repair method it was important to utilise the correct method and materials. Beton Bauen Ltd has a great deal of experience with this type of problem and following siccessful site trials the correct materials and method were approved by the Engineer. This process involved introducing a resin into a crack, forming a seal or a structural bond. On this occasion a two component epoxy resin supplied by Normet UK Ltd was used. TamRez 210 is a low modulus, extra low viscosity epoxy adhesive designed to be injected into cracks which exhibit minor movement or are subject to shock or vibration. Its low viscosity allows maximum penetration into small, hairline cracks or fractures. TamRez 210 returns structural integrity and protects reinforcement.

Resin injection packers were installed into pre-drilled holes to a set pattern based on the site trials. If the pre-drill holes were too wide apart from each other there would be a good chance of losing and wasting material beneath the slab, too close together then you may struggle to penetrate the full crack length making a less effective structural bond. 13mm packers also supplied by Normet UK Ltd were installed into the pre-drilled holes acting as non-return valves. The resin injection pump (Tam Drill Pump supplied by Normet UK) is then able to inject resin through the packer systems.

On completion of an area, the concrete topping was hammer tested as part of the QA procedure and then these areas were handed back as completed to the main contractor.

After three weeks of injection works and 250 litres of TamRez 210 later, the job was deemed a success with the main contractor very happy with the end results of both the workmanship and also the product itself. The main contractor was able to finish the job on time with the final coating system applied without too much delay.
