Roofs RUSSELL ENVIROTILE

Russell Envirotile is a British-made pioneering new green roofing product designed to meet the ever growing need for sustainable construction materials. This is the first fully sustainable interlocking roof tile: manufactured from recycled polypropylene (mainly from car components normally destined for landfill) it is also fully recyclable at the end of its life.

Offering unrivalled technical performance along with excellent eco-credentials, the BREEAM compliant Russell Envirotile was developed over a four year period in association with Wolverhampton University and the Green Roof Tile Company. It provides a technically advanced alternative to traditional roofing materials. The precision design and manufacture fully utilises the latest in recycled material technology, which ensures every tile meets the highest standards.

The Russell Envirotile’s light weight (just 720g) means it can be transported efficiently, thus reducing transport costs and carbon footprint as well. It is also much easier to handle, being up to 25% quicker to fill than traditional roofing products and can be cut with a handsaw rather than requiring a petrol saw, again, lessening its environmental impact.

Russell Envirotile provides a viable sustainable option for flat roofing as it can be used on pitches as low as 12.5

degrees, and with each tile interlocking with the adjacent tiles in eight places, the roof’s integrity acts as a whole so no individual tile can easily dislodge.

Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles comments; “This product was designed in response to changing market developments and the challenge of sustainable roofing, which is so far very limited to ‘green roofs’.”

The product has been designed not only for domestic new build but is also expected to be particularly attractive to public sector build projects and social housing. Specifically where local authorities require the relevant Code for Sustainable Homes standards to be met as a condition of planning consent.

SIG ROOFING URGES CONTRACTORS TO BE VIGILANT WHEN CHOOSING SLATE

An increase in incorrectly marked, inferior slate coming into the UK market poses a worrying threat to merchants and contractors, warns SIG Roofing Supplies - the leading supply chain experts of roofing materials in the UK and the largest distributor of natural slate in Europe.

Following the recent collapse of the slate market in France and the desperate bid by some Spanish quarries to make up their volumes elsewhere, rust-risk (effectively

T2) slates are being badged and sold as T1 slate. UK roofers are buying these ‘competitive slates, often little cheaper than good, reliable T1 slate, completely unaware of the risks they are taking. While some quarries may even have ‘T1’ certification for some of their product, they will have such a history of rust that knowledgeable importers will avoid them - or sell it as T2. The temptation for some distributors is to hope for the best and sell them ‘as seen’ and their after-sales service may be no better than the slates.

SIGA’s Slate Category Manager, Joe Bordas explains: “Concern is escalating regarding this situation as UK roofers are being duped into thinking they have a genuine bargain. Not only are roofers being deliberately misled, these slates are often ones our experienced buyers

have already investigated, considered, and turned down due to excessive risk; either in the rock used, or commercially.”

The problems caused by using inferior natural slate have long been a challenge to the roofing industry. Not only can it be riddled with inconsistencies and imperfections that result in high wastage, it often translates into higher labour costs too.

“It’s bad enough that the slate is actually inferior, but being duped into believing that the slate is actually high quality T1 slate is appalling,” states Bordas. “When the roof rusts getting restitution is exceedingly difficult, with some importers refusing to accept there are problems - leaving the contractor with the choice of swallowing the costs of re-roofing, or taking legal action.”
