Monstrous Novel Based in
the Cotswolds The Witcherley Book Company are pleased to announce that, local writer, Wilkie Martin’s first novel, Inspector Hobbes and the Blood, has just been published,
The first in his humorous ‘unhuman’ series, the novel recounts the misadventures of a hapless local reporter when he is assigned to the monstrous Inspector Hobbes. ‘The monstrous Inspector Hobbes was an idea I’d had for some time and it was partially inspired by a TV programme some years ago. This had Alan Titchmarch made-up as a Neanderthal walking
around a town
unnoticed,’ says Wilkie, ‘and I thought what if there really were non-human people, or ‘unhuman’s, walking around, and what if one was a policeman?’ It is a fast-paced crime fantasy story with lots of ludicrous and humorous situations, making it a great diverting light read to take on holiday.
A Cirencester resident for 26 years, Wilkie began writing short stories and funny poems (some now on the wilkiewrites channel on youtube) after attending a creative writing course at Cirencester College. He chose to base his novels in a fictionalized Cotswolds because ‘that allows me to play with the locations, to add places and to use ones from history that no longer exist’. He has a collection of old guide books and old photographs around the region and uses these for inspiration.
Inspector Hobbes and the Blood is his first published novel; it was shortlisted for the Impress Prize for New Writers in 2012, and will be available from 26th July 2013 in paperback (ISBN: 9780957635104, £7.99) and Kindle (ISBN: 9780957635111, £4.99) editions on or can be ordered from good bookshops.
