Laurie Plant - Cirencester Artist - coming soon to C-4-B

Exhibition: Cirencester, Capital of the Cotswolds: the artistic vision of Bingham, Beechamand Plant 10-2pm, 10 and 24 Aug, 14 and 28 Sept, BinghamGallery, Cirencester

This new exhibition, which opened in May, cele- brates the centenary of Daniel Bingham (1830- 1913), the bicentenary of artist John Beecham (1813-1882), and the work of local artist Laurie Plant. Included in the exhibition is a new paint- ing ‘Cirencester Capital Of The Cotswolds‘ commis- sioned by the Bingham Library Trustees from local artist Laurie Plant. (painting pictured below)

The painting investigates our perception of ideas surrounding the ever-changing role of perspective, and reflects the Dutch life of Bingham through

similar use of optics and surreal techniques to Dutch painters such as Holbein, Hobbema and Escher.

The painting gradually reveals through

metaphors, puzzles, distortion, reflection, refrac- tion and other techniques, a kaleidoscopic treasure trove of thoughts that attempt to make recognis- able parts of Cirencester today as unfamiliar as possible, in the most precise way.

Drawings were made over a two year period to research ideas about Cirencester to develop in the painting, and these formed the source material for the final painting and as such were critical in its creation.

Laurie will talk about this and other creations at C- 4-B on 10th September, 7:15 a.m. at Stratton House Hotel.
