Cirencester Scene Magazine - Establishing Local Connections The Butts Farm Rare Breeds

There is so much to do and see at the Butts Farm and, although we are in the middle of summer, there is still spring

in the air! A baby Dexter calf has just been born and more cows are due to have their offspring at anytime. The Guinea Pigs have surprised us all by having little ones. They are one of the first things you will see as you wander past the stables towards the barns for your first activity at 11am - Goat Milking.

There are little piglets running around too. It’s alright, they are allowed. At this tender age they don’t cause too much havoc and in a blink of an eye they will scamper back to mum for a drink and a snooze. Just give them a scratch and you will have made a little porcine friend. You never know one of them might be a future prizewinner at the county shows like their cousins. You can see all the prizes won over the years, when you have a breather in the spacious party room.

Thomas and Percy the donkeys will be coming out after lunch so you can give them a good brush and get another sticker to add to your collection. This one says “I have groomed a donkey.”

Would you believe it you even get to stroke a tortoise at Bunny Time!

After all that excitement why not visit our Farmyard Tearoom where you can sit down,

relax and enjoy a Cotswold Cream Tea or a homemade pie or pasties.

Then back to the farm again as the pirate ship beckons. Or is it the little red tractor asking you to climb aboard and imagine you are both ploughing the fields - “steer straight, keep in the furrows.”

What day is it? Is it Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday? Time to feed the vast and varied array of chickens, ducks, geese and, most important, Trevor the Turkey. Then collect an egg to take home. Possibly it’s Friday or Saturday - pony and donkey rides (definitely a favourite, but don’t despair, the queue is never very long). Perhaps it’s Sunday - Tractor Safari - when we can get really close to the pony foals we have seen in the fields and scatter food for the

sheep and cattle. Don’t worry everyone gets a go, just wait and we will be back in 15 minutes.

Then, on the way out, visit the award-winning Farm Shop and choose from a fabulous selection of rare breed meat including our own home cured bacon and superb sausages. There’s also plenty of local fruit and veg for those who like it! Oh look! There are some farmyard toys and the like on that shelf ……..

The Butts Farm Rare Breeds is situated 3 miles east of Cirencester on the old A419 towards Swindon, beside the Cirencester bypass. Follow the brown tourismsigns.
