Responding to the report, Gingerbread, the organisation which supports single parents has pointed out:

Single parent homes make up approximately one in four households with children – a pro- portion that has barely changed in the last dec- ade.

Two-thirds of children have regular contact with both parents after separation.

Too many children do not get the emotional and financial support they deserve from the parent they are not living with.

Steven Barratt a solicitor who specialises in family cases at Alison Fielden and Co solicitors in Cirencester says “Whilst organisations and politicians can use these statistics to support both sides of the argument about where fault lies, the truth clearly is that too many children do not have sufficient contact with the parent that they do not live with. Sometimes there are good reasons for the safety of the children, but generally children do have the right to a rela- tionship with both parents and I am concerned that these figures may grow following the re-

moval of legal aid for this type of case. However I would urge parents not to walk away from seeking contact with their children notwith- standing the difficulties and expense that they may face. Here at Alison Fielden we always en- courage parents to think of what will be best for their children and to be guided by that.”
