Whether you’re on a diet or just trying to watch your weight, dining out can be an enjoyable experience if you know what to look for. Here are some tips to help keep you eating healthy while still dining at your favorite restaurants.

Customize Your Order. Ask your server to substitute starchy or fried sides for something lighter, like steamed vegetables. If having a baked potato, ask for salsa instead of butter and sour cream. Have all dressings, gravies and sauces served on the side.

Avoid Extras. Many restaurants offer bread or chips while waiting for your food, ask that these items not be brought to your table. If you want an alcoholic drink, try to avoid the exotic beverages—margaritas, piña coladas, etc.—and opt for wine or light beer.

Read Between the Lines. Avoid foods that are described with the following words, because they are most likely loaded with hidden fats: au gratin, fried, crisp, sauced, scalloped, sautéed and buttery.

Share the Food. A great way to watch your calorie intake is to share appetizers, meals and desserts with others at your table. Or, eat half your meal and box the rest up for the next day. Two meals for the price of one is always an added bonus!

Remember, dining out is an experience—enjoy it!
