The seventh NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Presented by Mobil 1 season is underway. The 12-race schedule, featuring eight oval and four road course events, is a gruelling test that will determine Canada’s national stock car champion for 2013. Last season, DJ Kennington rewrote the record
books. The veteran driver won seven of 12 events on his way to earning his second career NASCAR championship. More than any other competitor, Kennington overcame adversity and the competition with a powerful combination of speed, reliability and skill. On ovals and road courses, Kennington would not be denied. But 2012 is in the record books and drivers from across Canada are lined up to try to thwart Kennington’s quest for a second con- secutive – and third overall – Canadian Tire Series title.

This season, teams will once again take to the track for 12 races, on 11 different tracks, across five Canadian provinces. The schedule includes many of Canada’s top racing facilities. While most of the venues are familiar, there are some significant changes for 2013. Most notable is the increased focus on the oval races. Last season, seven of the series’ 12 events took place on short track ovals. In 2013, that number rises to eight. So while championship contenders will still need to per- form well in the four road course races, their weighting in the overall equation has been lessened. “The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series features the top drivers in the country competing on Canada’s finest stock car racing circuits,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “With a challeng-
ing mixture of ovals and road courses, and a new high-profile companion event at Cana- dian Tire Motorsport Park, the 2013 calendar will continue to bring excitement to race fans from coast to coast.” For the second season in a row, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series kicked off its schedule at the 2.459-mile Canadian Tire Mo- torsport Park road course near Bowmanville, Ontario. Louis-Philippe Dumoulin, a racer who many expect to challenge for the champi- onship, scored his first career Canadian Tire Series victory when he came home in front of Jeff Lapcevich and Jason Hathaway. The series will make a return visit to the
track’s road course on the Labour Day weekend as part of an historic racing card that will feature the first ever appearance, outside of the US, by the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
