New skills

NEWLY qualified Social Workers can soon boost their skills through a new qualification designed for professionals by the councils who employ them. The new Graduate Certificate in

Consolidation of Social Work Practice is validated by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. It is the first programme to be approved by the Care Council for Wales as part of its new framework of Continuing Professional Education and Learning for Social Work in Wales. It aims to further improve the standard of social work practice as well as support social workers as they progress to the top of

and developed by a partnership of 12 Welsh local authorities, collectively called Porth Agored.

Rail safety

CARMARTHENSHIRE’S Community Safety Department has been working closely with the British Transport Police (BTP) to educate young people about the dangers of trespassing on the railway. At a Phoenix Course held at

Carmarthen Fire Station, the BTP outlined the hazards associated with trespassing on railway lines and the potential

consequences. The

initiative was introduced following a number of concerns raised about children playing on and running across railway lines, particularly around the back of the KFC outlet in Pensarn. Carmarthenshire

Safety Manager John Jones said: “Having been made aware of an issue locally, I invited the BTP to give their input in order to educate the children and the community in the hope of avoiding further incidents on the track.”

A GROUP of aspiring young doctors visited Carmarthen Fire Station recently to gain an insight into the Fire and Rescue Service and the work they do in the community. Dr Ruth Williams, Programme

Director for the Carmarthenshire GP Speciality Trainee Scheme, along with 16 trainee GPs were shown around the station, where they viewed the various fire appliances and items of equipment. The group was also given a chip pan fire demonstration and the station’s on duty crew carried out a road traffic simulation, which showed the procedure for extricating trapped

casualties. Dr Williams said: “There was

plenty of opportunity for safety tips which helps to inform our patients. It was particularly interesting to learn more about the role of the fire service in road traffic collision situations and finding out about the free home fire safety checks they offer.” Trainee Doctor, Louise Browne added: “The staff were all really enthusiastic and the chip pan fire demonstration was brilliant. It was good to see how involved the Service are with the community and how they interact with health and paramedic services.”

Muddy roads Keep in Touch

FARMERS are being reminded to help keep rural roads safe following concerns raised about mud on county roads. They have a legal responsibility to

ensure that every precaution is taken to avoid mud being carried off the field. Although some will end up on the highway, it is important to remove it immediately. If mud is left on roads, warning signs should be used to alert motorists to the potential hazard.
