REGENERATION work in Llanelli town centre is now almost complete with another of the Big 5 £60million investment projects delivered. New canopies line the streets with a free standing stainless steel

and glass canopy and new bench taking pride of place in Stepney Street. It is part of the environmental improvements through the ADREF programme which includes new paving traffic improvements and public art works. It follows the completion of three of the big five projects – Llanelli

Library, Y Ffwrnes theatre, and EastGate. The final piece of the jigsaw, Llanelly House, is due for completion later this year. The work has taken place with the aim of regenerating and

refreshing the town centre, it is hoped that the improvements will attract more investment and encourage more businesses to open. Footfall has already gone up, with EastGate and Y Ffwrnes attracting people into the town centre both day and night, and Llanelli Library is reporting record numbers of people through its doors. An opening event is proposed for early June to celebrate the

completion of the work and the relaunch of the town centre. Along with the official reopening, there will be activities, attractions and events taking place in various venues. The improvement work to the streets linking the four new

facilities has been delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council with European Convergence funding through the Welsh Government.

Success at Eastgate Tinplate art

JUST one restaurant unit remains to be let at Eastgate which is already proving to be a huge success. The two latest signings for the £26million development are

Gourmet Street, an Indian/Chinese buffet; and Zolas Brai, a South African steakhouse. Operators already in place include Nandos, Hungry Horse, Costa, Jenkins, and the Llanelli Scarlets. Mabs Noor from Gourmet Street said: “Our aim is to bring

something new and vibrant for the people of Llanelli and Carmarthenshire. We are bringing flavour and spice to East Gate and adding to the already great variety on offer. We are very excited to be opening at the scheme… watch this space!” Nandos and the Hungry Horse restaurant pub, The New

Stepney, are both reporting booming trade just months after opening. The five screen Odeon cinema which anchors the development along with a 53-bed Travelodge Hotel, has been a huge success. The state of the art Ffwrnes Theatre, which has seen packed

houses since opening in January, further complements the area, creating a leisure destination which is drawing customers from a wide catchment from Carmarthen to Swansea. Visit www.eastgatellanelli.co.uk

PEOPLE who used to work in the old tinplate works in Llanelli are being asked to share their memories as part of art work being created at EastGate. Artist Peter Walker is making a sculpture which

will have pride of place in the public square. Peter is producing a film of the process and he would like to interview and film former workers to have a record of their memories to go with the sculpture. Regeneration executive board member Cllr Meryl

Gravell said: “We appreciate that many of the former tinplate workers will be older now as the last pack mill closed around 1959, but Peter would love to speak to anyone who has memories of working in the old mills. We want to involve local people and get their input in the creation of this memorial for the tinworks.” The sculpture will incorporate two figures, one

male and one female, working together to forge the foundation stones of the town. It is due to be completed in September. Contact Sue Moore on 01554 748826 for more information.
