Welfare reform
CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council is supporting thousands of people
affected by the
Government’s Welfare Reform. Since the changes started to take
effect in April, staff have carried out home visits and taken phone calls to offer information and advice to those who now find themselves under new financial pressure. A host of information has also been made available on the council website, and delivered directly to those affected. A series of roadshows are now
being held in all corners of the county to help people make their lives easier by increasing their disposable income – either through claiming benefits they didn’t know they were entitled to receive, to making their homes cheaper to run. The roadshows will provide advice
and information regardless of whether someone is a tenant or a homeowner;
those who are
unemployed or those in full-time work. Dates and venues will be promoted
on the council’s website, Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as in the local press.
£0.5m for safe roads
CARMARTHENSHIRE’S transport team is leading the way in Wales providing Safe Routes in Communities. The Welsh Government has
granted £499,129 - one of the highest awards in the latest bidding rounds - to encourage walking and cycling, a reduction in private car use and improvements to road safety around Mynyddygarreg and Kidwelly. It follows on the back of a £600,000 scheme just completed in Pembrey Following an exhibition this month,
work will start on the Kidwelly and Mynyddygarreg project in June and be completed by March 2014. It will include improvements at Pembrey Road, Monksford Street, the junction of Station Road and Bridge Street; traffic calming on the Priory Street school route, introduction of speed activated signs and the reduction of speeds from 30 to 20mph at Ger-y- Castell and Ger-y-Gwendraeth. Carmarthenshire transport strategy manager Simon Charles “Through a

engineering and education initiatives this project offer will help generate road safety,
encourage more
sustainable travel and provide environmental enhancements.” Residents had provided valued
ideas and participated in traffic surveys to help the bid triumph.
EVERY year, art and design students exhibit their work in Carmarthenshire to showcase the diverse talent of emerging artists and to show the breadth of creative learning opportunities in the county. The work on show is from Coleg
Sir Gâr’s School of Creative Arts, based in Carmarthen and is run in partnership with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The campus is unique as the whole site is devoted all things creative, with every student on campus studying an art and design course, in various disciplines. The show dates for this year are:
Degree Show –May 25 to June 7 and the Further Education Show is being held from June 17 – 21. Both
exhibitions are being held at the college’s Jobs Well campus and are open free to the public. Further education art exhibitions
are also being held the college’s Llanelli campus on May 20 to June 14 (level three) and June 7-14 (level one) which are also free to the public. Courses range from level one visual
arts, extended diplomas in art and fashion,

Volunteers needed
COUNTRY Cars is
Carmarthenshire’s own voluntary social car service. The scheme is a partnership with
the County Council and WRVS. Carmarthenshire pays volunteers’ expenses and provides policy guidelines
and administrative
support. WRVS recruits and trains local volunteers to provide the service. Country Cars helps people like
Llanybydder’s Ian Callan who because of sight problems is unable to make essential journeys either for himself or for his wife whom he cares for. Mr Callan is concerned that now
this lifeline is threatened due to lack of volunteers and is supporting the appeal for people to help the service. As a volunteer, you would be
helping to provide an essential service to many such isolated and vulnerable people. If you are able to help, please contact the WRVS on 01269 843819. Give a little, gain a lot – become a volunteer for Country Cars.
Showcase of arts talent
Medal of excellence for Llanelli student
A LLANELLI graduate has been invited to a London award ceremony to receive a Medal for Excellence for her interior design work. Catherine Thomas, a Coleg Sir Gâr
graduate, changed her career following a successful time working in high level politics. Her desire to be her own boss turned into reality when she met her now business partner on Coleg Sir Gâr’s creative
arts course where she was nominated for the City & Guilds award. Catherine, who runs a jointly-
owned design and consultancy business called Pupur a Halen, will be presented with her award in London in June. She said: “It’s never too late to take a different direction and I think the biggest risk you can take is not taking one at all.”
