COLEG Sir Gâr’s catering and hospitality section is celebrating three all-Wales awards won by its students, two of which were gold. Merlin’s Restaurant based in
Carmarthen is the college’s training restaurant where the public enjoy Haute d cuisine food cooked and served by students studying a range of cookery and hospitality. The quality of their work has impressed judges in three recent Skills Competition Wales events where they won two golds and a bronze. Leon Lane took the top spot in
Wales for the Professional Cookery category, Menna Williams, Leon Lane and Sarah Hammond were a strong team who won gold at the Cook and Serve category, and Sarah Hammond impressed the judges
with her keen eye for a sweet dish as she took bronze in the Patisserie category. The judges at the Cook and Serve
said:
competition included Stewart Williams, head chef at the Stradey Park Hotel and Mark Mason, proprietor of Y Polyn. They required students to prepare and serve in either a silver or table theatre service, a number of dishes including tuna nicoise and a hot soufflé pudding with crème Anglaise. Government, the competitions are designed to showcase excellence in vocational training and promote the importance of a highly skilled workforce.”

THE Carmarthenshire Dementia Action Board will be officially launched
during Dementia
Awareness Week, May 20-25. The Board, chaired by Cllr Jane
Tremlett, includes representatives of Carmarthenshire County Council, Hywel Dda Health Board, and the Independent Sector joined by carers and cared-for people, to develop and improve services for people with dementia in Carmarthenshire.
New zones
DYFED Powys Police are working with Trading Standards to identify and establish no cold-calling zones. They are set up where the majority
of residents don’t want cold callers knocking on their doors. Zones can range from just a few houses to several hundred, and should meet three criteria: • a history of doorstep crime or distraction burglary
• a vulnerable population • a defined geographical area
