APPRENTICES from
Carmarthenshire are to build a grinding mill and food warehouse for a group of widows living in Kachumbala, Uganda. The charity mission is being led by Constructing
Carmarthenshire
Together – a partnership made up of Carmarthenshire County Council, Coleg Sir Gâr and Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd (CCTAL) – supported by CITB and a host of local building and supply firms. In association with the SaltPeter
Trust, they will build the facilities for a co-operative of 30 widows, allowing them to process crops of Cassava – a staple food in the developing world – for their own families as well as for sale. A fundraising dinner held at Parc Y
Scarlets raised £30,000 for the mission, adding to donations from members of the public. Manager of CCTAL, Anthony Rees,
said: “We will be sending newly qualified construction apprentices from Carmarthenshire to Uganda at the end of the summer to supervise, build and pass on their skills to locals during construction of the mill. It will be a rewarding and thought- provoking project, and will be a unique
experience apprentices.” Army fit

created by Carmarthenshire council Leader Kevin Madge to lobby for an early date to start on the bypass. County executive board member
for engineering and transport Cllr Evans said: “This announcement shows the value of the creation of the Forum and I want to thank the leader for his involvement, the Welsh Government and MP Jonathan Edwards and AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas for their support. “This is just the beginning with a
great deal of work to be done to ensure the environmental impact of the vitally necessary scheme is minimised and delivery is within timescales set.” Cllr Evans said he invited the MPs
to attend a recent Forum meeting to hear for themselves the evidence of
pollution contravening European standards and was delighted that Jonathan Edwards had approached the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport Edwina Hart MP and got a speedy response announcing that a start on construction would be made in three years.
