The Library Expands Paws2Read Programming
M
an’s furry, four-legged best friend has a new
job at The Library. For the first time during the school year, Dauphin County Library Sys- tem’s East Shore area location
welcomes children to attend Paws2Read, a special program encouraging youth to build reading confidence while sharing stories with certified therapy dogs. The program is held at 6 p.m., the second Monday of each month. Led by Maureen Mashas, a certified speech pathologist for Rutherford and Paxtang elementary schools, Paws2Read began after Mashas saw the positive effects that reading to dogs had on her students. During the sessions, children select books of interest and then take turns reading to the dogs. Incorporating a dog as part of storytime also encour- ages students to talk about emotional themes discussed in the book. The dogs serve as theoretical puppets on which to place emotions, opening the dialogue to difficult conversa- tions such as bullying, winning and losing and developing stronger social skills.

Sacred Kirtan Artist Jai Jagdeesh Live in Concert
9 p.m., May 16, at the New Cumber- land Fire Hall. A pre-concert happy hour yoga class and an after-concert reception offering baked goods from New Cumberland restaurants and yogi tea will be held at Kundalini Yoga and Wellness. Jagdeesh’s journey as a singer began more than 20 years ago in a temple in India and continued through childhood. While at school in Amritsar, she traveled around Northern India as one of the musical representatives of Yogi Bhajan’s foreign education program (now Miri Piri Academy), playing kirtan everywhere the students were invited. Her creative spirit has walked many artistic paths—ac- tress, classical Indian dancer, photographer and writer—and she says, “I find myself in perfect balance now that music has returned to the forefront.” Jagdeesh’s first album, I Am Thine, was a bestseller at Summer Solstice 2011.
