communityspotlight Kalpa Bhadra Kadampa
Buddhist Center by Beth Davis
A
nonprofit, volunteer- based organization dedicated to the
development of inner peace through the study and prac- tice of Buddha’s teachings, the Kalpa Bhadra Kadampa Buddhist Center provides a year-round program of meditation classes, workshops and retreats that offer practical advice on how to apply those teachings to daily life. Erica Richardson, the center’s resi-
dent teacher, says the ultimate goal is to increase one’s happy state of mind by increasing his or her inner peace. She leads guided meditation classes at 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesdays, that are designed to give a broad intro- duction to Buddhist meditation, ideas and practice and help people overcome
anger, stress, jealousy or anxi- ety and increase their positive mind.
In Simply Meditate, at
7 p.m. on Thursdays, partici- pants learn the basic prin- ciples of meditation according to the Buddhist tradition, as well as the fundamentals of building a successful meditation practice that will bring positive benefits to their life. “These classes are open to anyone that would like to develop more happiness, be more peaceful and improve relation- ships with others—you don’t have to be a Buddhist,” says Richardson.
