A lifetime dedicated to the Arabian horse

By Melissa Kosowan

For over 40 years, Jean Dins- more has been a familiar face with- in the Arabian horse community where she has been involved as an owner, exhibitor and tireless volun- teer. At the age of 75, she is finally allowing herself to slow down, but her contributions have not gone unnoticed.

“For me it was self-satisfac- tion,” says Dinsmore when asked why she got involved. “I just like to show the people that the Arabian horses aren’t scatterbrains like everyone says they are. I really love watching the horse shows. I like being involved with the horses and the horse people.”

Over the years, Dinsmore has volunteered at countless horse shows, often working the in-gate, or wherever else she was needed to help things run smoothly.

“Anything anyone ever asks me to do, I do it,” she says. For over a decade, she also served on the board of directors for the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada.

“Jean was always an enthusi- astic member of our board of direc- tors, with many suggestions of development of programs to encourage amateur riders and give something back in the process,” says Jill Barton, AHAEC treasurer. One of Dinsmore’s greatest contributions to the breed, howev- er, was the launch of the Arabian Royal Red Amateur Bonanza (ARRAB) program in 1996. The program encourages Canadian amateurs to participate in the Region 18 Championships in spe- cially designated classes.

“At that time they had a class at the Canadian Nationals for Canadians only. My purpose was to enhance that, but as soon as I got things on the go, they cancelled the classes at the Nationals,” says Dinsmore.

Not to be discouraged, she pushed onwards with the program. Last year, there were 27 horses nominated into the program, with 19 horses getting a payout of $318.20.

“Jean, her family and their clients are supportive of all the club and regional competitions and any other club function,” says Bar- ton. “We certainly need more vol- unteers who give willingly of their time like Jean does.”

Although she has been recog- nized on several occasions with volunteer service awards from the Arabian Horse Association, Dins- more was thrilled to be honoured before her peers at the annual OEF Awards Party in November. “It was quite a surprise when I opened the letter. I had it sitting on my desk for awhile,” she says. “I opened it and I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that I had won this award. So, I was very, very pleased.”

So what motivates her to give so much of her time to the Arabian horse? According to Dinsmore, it’s her love for the breed that inspires and motivates her.

“It is a source for Canadian amateurs to show against Canadian amateurs without having to show against the professionals,” she explains. “To me it worked out really well.”

“I love the Arabian horse and horses have been my dream all my life,” she says. “Even in public school and high school my books were full of little horses with fly- away tails and flyaway manes.” That dream became a reality in 1970 when Dinsmore bought Gai- leyna, her first Arabian. She joined the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada the following year and never looked back.

Dinsmore works hard to secure sponsorships for the pro- gram and also hosts an annual trail ride at her farm in Fordwich, ON. Her passion for the program pro- vides a payout for eligible top five finishers in the classes.

Just as Dinsmore is a familiar face at Arabian horse shows, she’s also a familiar face in her commu- nity, too. Dinsmore, a registered nurse, started the Fordwich Village Nursing Home in 1965, which she and her husband David operated until 1974. Dinsmore also led 4H in her county for almost 15 years. Today, she is a member of the Lions Club, she takes part in the Maitland Valley Camera Club, she is a lay reader in the Anglican Church and she gives her time to her local church women’s group. She is also a director on the How- ick-Turnberry Agricultural Fall Fair and is working to raise funds to build an indoor arena for fair’s horse shows and outdoor exhibits, which are often rained or snowed out.

“Jean makes sure all of her sponsors and supporters get a per- sonal thank you for their support of any program,” says Barton, who assists with the ARRAB program. That commitment to the Ara- bian horse and the people who love it is why Dinsmore received the 2012 People Make a Difference Award. In recognition of the behind-the-scenes effort of many equine enthusiasts, the Ontario

“Gaileyna took our kids all through the youth classes and I rode her,” Dinsmore says, reflect- ing on the first addition, who lived to be 35 years old. “She was also in 4H. She really liked to herd cattle and I did team penning with her.” From that first mare, Dins- more’s herd grew. Tagalong Sta- bles, which is located on a tranquil farm that has been in Dinsmore’s family for 150 years, became a successful breeding operation and home to champions.

Despite all that she has given back and everything she has accomplished, Dinsmore has one regret; her dream was to ride in the show ring with her daughter Car- olyn de Boer and granddaughter, Amanda de Boer. Unfortunately, the three generations never made it into the ring together, although Dinsmore can often be found cheering from the rail.

“I can’t ride anymore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy my Arabians,” she says.

Don’t count her out yet, though. Dinsmore, who still owns seven horses, hopes to return to the show ring in the future, this time with a driving horse.

Dinsmore is particularly proud of the national victories her horses have won. Daughter and trainer Carolyn de Boer rode Bint Shaklan NA to a Reserve Championship in

But it’s not her wins that Dinsmore wants to be remembered for. Honesty and her true love of the Arabian horse is what she hopes come to mind when people think of her.
