The Ontario Cutting Horse Association has been promoting the sport of cutting in Ontario for more than forty years. It is a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting the breeding, train- ing and showing of the cutting horse. The OCHA is an affiliate of the National Cutting Horse Asso- ciation.

from the herd. In the arena, the cutting horse is judged on its’ ability to move quietly through the herd and bring a few head of cattle out to the middle of the arena. When one cow is held out from the herd, the rider puts down the rein hand and lets the horse work the cow on its own. The judges look for how well the horse controls the cow, eye appeal, degree of difficulty, time worked on each cow, and amount of courage shown by the horse, among other things. Many times the movements of the cutting horse have been compared to a dance.

If you would like to come see our horses in action, we will be at the following shows this year: May 4 - NCHA clinic, Minshall Farm, Hillsburgh ON May 5 - OCHA show, Minshall Farm, Hillsburgh ON May 18-19 - OCHA show, Walker Farms, Richmond ON June 1-2 - NCHA/AQHA days, Minshall Farm, Hillsburgh ON July 6-7 - OCHA show, McCann Farm, Campbellford ON Aug 17-18 - OCHA show, Stetzl Farm, Aylmer ON Aug 30-31 - OCHA show, Paris Fair, Paris ON Sept 28-29 - OCHA show, Van Boekel Farm, Norwich ON

The day before our show season starts, the OCHA is hosting a NCHA Academy Grassroots Clinic on May 4th at the Minshall Farm. The purpose of this clinic is two-fold; first is to provide a fun, educational atmosphere that allows people interested in cutting to receive one-on-one education as well as draw cutters to our area to help increase entries for our shows. Each NCHA Academy Grassroots Clinic has two sessions.

1. The morning session will begin at approximately 8:00 am with a lunch break around noon. Russell McCord, NCHA Director of Judges, will conduct the morning session explaining what judges are looking for in a run and going over some fundamental NCHA rules. This session is $35 payable at the door on May 4th and it includes a lunch. There is no additional charge to stay and observe the afternoon live works from the stands.

2. The live works session starts at approximately 1:00 pm and is limited to 25 riders. The live works session allows the participant to cut 3 calves (no clock). After each cut, the run is critiqued by the Judge (Russell McCord) and a TBD Trainer, allowing for feedback of three cuts per participant. The live works session is $175 and includes the morning session.
