President’s Message

I am delighted to be taking on the role of President of the Ontario Reining Horse Association, and I am really looking forward to the next two years.

We have a very strong Board and I expect to continue its great work in advancing the interests of the ORHA and our membership. I would like to thank outgoing President, Carol Ivey, for her past four years of leading the ORHA - she has done a fantastic job, intro- ducing many new initiatives and making positive changes to our Association, and our members have the utmost respect for her, and she leaves big shoes to fill.

This year holds a full slate of shows and promises to be another very successful season of reining, and I hope to meet and chat to each of you at those shows. The show calendar is of course posted on the ORHA website, and please check it regularly for updates and items of interest, and also join us on Facebook if you have not already. If you have any questions or concerns, or ideas for the improve- ment of the ORHA, please feel free to come to me, or I can be reached by email at mmunroe@rjburnside.com.

Mike Munroe Youth Helmet Rule

The youth helmet rule has been amended slightly and the fol- lowing sanctions introduced.

“All riders under the age of 18 must wear an approved equine safety helmet while mounted on a horse at any ORHA approved show. These are to be worn as per the manufacturer’s specification. A rider aged 14 or older is exempt from this requirement while showing in a class, provided a signed waiver from a parent is on file at that show office. As well, he or she may remove the helmet and replace it with a western hat 5 horses or 15 minutes prior to entering

the show pen to compete.

The board has approved the following sanctions for violation of the helmet rule, which will be handed out by ORHA board members. These are cumulative.

First offence, a verbal warning, recorded at the show office Second offence, loss of all ORHA year-end points earned at that

particular show

Third offence, loss of all ORHA year-end points earned and/or suspension from the ORHA”

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of ORHA was held on Sunday February 10, 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Guelph. The previous Friday had left a wallop of snow in Ontario and the whole eastern seaboard, which accounted for President Carol Ivey’s absence, as she could not make it home from Tennessee. In her place, incoming President, Mike Munroe, did an admiral job of chairing the meeting. Guest speaker, Sara Runnels, of BLF Insurance, provided an overview of benefits for Ontario Equestrian Federation members. Accidents can and do happen and Federation membership provides $5,000,000 automatic personal liability insurance, and $30,000 acci- dental death and dismemberment coverage. O.E.F. membership appli- cations were available as well personal question opportunities with Sara or her associate.

Through Carol’s President’s Message, individual congratula- tions went out to the following ORHA members:

Dan Fletcher for achieving NRHA World Champion in Prime Time Non Pro,

Tim Stanton for achieving Novice Horse Open level 2 Reserve Champion,

Mike Munroe for the Brian Heaton Memorial Award, and finally to John and Sharon Fletcher for earning the 2012 OEF People Make a Difference Award and the 2012 NRHA Top Twenty Owners List. Ken Van Alstine, a Director since 2005, is stepping down this

year. The Association presented a special ORHA jacket as a token of their appreciation for his solid years as a director. Ken has been a great leading soldier for the board.

Art Roberts, our NRHA representative, announced that ORHA has attained the Bronze Level NRHA Affiliate Incentive. As well, he and Carol created a New Member’s Orientation Package last year, which will be used by board member, Blair Spedaler, as he attends various community events. As well, if you know of interested com- munity members, do not hesitate to contact a board member for Ori- entation Packages. It is also posted on our website. We are excited to be participating in Ontario’s Mane Event March 28-31 at the International Centre. If you aren’t busy that day, be sure to come out and visit the booth.

Ken Van Alstine shared the specifics on the lack of growth the Sired Stakes Program has experienced the last couple of years. A lot of hard work has gone into this program, but the end result is that breeding in Ontario is declining and it felt that it was best to close out now, so current participants could be paid out with existing funds. High accolades go to our outgoing president. She has led us through four years with her strong work ethic and beneficial fundrais- ing tactics. We are pleased that even though she is slipping off the Presidential hat, she will continue to be an active Board member (we hope for many years to come!).
