MARCH/APRIL 2013 THE RIDER /35 OQHA Trainers Challenge
OQHA realizes how important our professionals are to our shows and associa- tion. Each year trainers haul their clients to our shows, par- ticipate in clinics at novice shows, but often don’t get the recognition they deserve. To assist with promoting our pro- fessionals in the industry, OQHA offered a trainers chal- lenge in 2012 and following a successful competition, we will offer it again for 2013. This is an opportunity to pro- mote our professionals and offer them a unique and fun filled challenge, allowing them to compete for a special OQHA year end award against other professionals.
With six trainers partici- pating in the challenge, the points were so close; it came down to the day of our AGM before we knew who would be receiving the Reserve award. We appreciated the support of our generous sponsors – Royle Trailers and Tom Howe for sponsoring the high point award, with the top trainer receiving a custom made Tom Howe belt buckle. Reserve award received a pair of Kathy’s spurs.
The competition allowed our trainers to earn bonus points by competing in “non showing events” in hopes to reach out to our members and other horse enthusiasts. These bonus tasks included submit- ting “how to” videos and men- torship of novice exhibitors at shows and OQHA events. There were a total of 9 great videos submitted by these pro- fessionals, so if you haven’t already watched them, please go to the OQHA website at
www.oqha.on.ca/about/train- er.html. These videos range in topics such things as how to hang a tail, various trail manoeuvers, and tips on west- ern pleasure.
We would like to thank our trainers for competing in this challenge and congratulate them on an excellent year. We look forward to added interest for 2013!
