MARCH/APRIL 2013 THE RIDER/ 5 Youth – Keeping Them Involved

Fun, friendship and horses—a potent combination for anyone, especially for a child. The Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada understands the importance of youth members and young equine enthusiasts, and hosts many activities throughout the year to keep them active. From meetings to fund-raising to volunteer work to horse shows to competi- tive trail rides to artwork to social networking to having fun, there is something to interest a child of any age!

AHAEC’s annual spring Youth Retreat offers a great opportuni- ty for our young enthusi- asts to learn more about horses from some of the best clinicians. This year Muskoka Trails Riding Academy facility in Kil- worthy will be the loca- tion for the clinics and

seminars on the weekend of April 27th & 28th. With stabling available onsite attendees are encouraged to bring their own horse for horseman- ship, showmanship and grooming, but is not a requisite as there will be horses to borrow or they can participate without a horse. Lindsey Knight, assistant trainer at Trow- bridge’s Ltd. in Conneti- cut, is the clinician for horsemanship and will assist each participant. David Freedman of Freedman Harness and Saddlery will also be on- hand. Additional semi- nars on equine massage, grooming and show preparation are sched- uled with more to be confirmed. Added this year will be age specific activities for children 3 to 6 years old on Satur- day afternoon.

“I am very excited about the composition of the Board this year,” said Gallagher. “We have a great group of people from diverse backgrounds and I think it will be a strong team to work with. “I would like to thank retiring Directors David Myers, John Harris and Geri Sweet for their dedi- cation to Equine Canada and for their years of ser- vice to the Board,” added Gallagher.

About Equine Canada

Equine Canada is the leading national sport and equine organization in the country. It fulfills a broad range of governance, advocacy and develop- ment functions, all of which focus, in one way or another, on the horse and draw on the enthusiasm it arouses. As a result of our efforts, Equine Canada is recognized by Sport Canada and the Féderation Equestre Internationale (FEI) as the national gov- erning body for equestrian sport and recreation in Canada. It is the industry sector leader and as such is recognized and supported by Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. In particular, its leadership in improving both the quality and condition of horses is lauded at home and abroad.

For the first time in the history of Equine Cana- da, the board has a majority of women, either elect- ed by the membership or representing a division of the federation.
