GOBBLE GOBBLE Thanks to reintroduction programs going back 25 years, turkey populations across the province have reached impressive levels. The glorious gobbler has evolved into one of the most prolific game species around, and they have adopted our region as their permanent home. Today, nearly 10,000 turkeys are harvested each year in the province, and of that amount, young males or “Jakes” comprise about 30 per cent of the take. If you should happen to harvest a Jake or Tom this spring during the season, remember you have until noon the next day to report your harvest. Call 1(800) 288- 1155. Use the keypad to select the Turkey Harvest Reporting option and be sure to have your Outdoors Hunting Card available. You will be asked things like how many days you hunted in that Wildlife Management Unit, and
the age and sex of your bird based on beard measurement. To purchase a license using the
automated telephone line, call the 1(800) number between March 1 and April 30. Your wild turkey license(s) and game seal(s) will be mailed the next business day.
BIG BUCK DAY For trophy hunters, the 18th Annual Big Buck Day is taking place this year on Sunday, April 14 at the Community Center in Little Britain. This event is one of the most popular big buck days in Ontario, attracting copious hunters and antler aficionados to the quaint little town near Lindsay. Ontario-harvested deer and
moose will be officially scored on- site by members of the Foundation for Recognition of Ontario Wildlife (FROW). Trophies are awarded for the largest typical and non-typical whitetail and for the largest moose. Each year there are several Boone and Crockett-class trophies entered and scored. Take note that big-game
measured by FROW before April 2 is NOT eligible. Trophies for the largest typical and non-typical deer and largest moose are being awarded. Sheds and found racks can also be scored, but are not eligible for prizes. The event, sponsored by the South
Central Ontario Fish and Wildlife Association, is a must do for all trophy fanatics. For more information, log onto:
