international competition for the “Peter Devine’s” sign. The menus vary from pub to

pub. There is the standard fish-and- chips-type fare, but the chefs at each location create the greater part of their menus, allowing for freshness and originality. Alex Munro, VP of Business

Operations and Development, told me he credits the success of the Heart and Crown Irish Pubs first to their guests and staff making the pubs a place where you feel welcome, and the dedication of the owners who put money back into the pubs and contribute and participate in their communities. They started by hosting a

Christmas dinner in 1992 and served about 30 people; today they feed more than 600 through the efforts of hard-working volunteers. They are also involved with many local organizations such as St. Patrick’s Home and the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre as the title sponsor for “Fight for the Cure”, which includes a sit-down dinner and six boxing bouts (three amateurs and three white collar) throughout the evening. They were also quick to sponsor a few of their staff members, including a boxer, a Miss Universe contestant and a comedian, encouraging them in the pursuit of their dreams. Of course there is live

entertainment at all of the pubs (including some interesting sports matches we can’t get here) – every night of the week at the Byward Market location − and for a look at what is coming up, or to have a peek at the menu, check out their website at: www.heartandcrown.ca. And then there is THE BEER!

All sorts of BEER!!! Such a variety, and I have no doubt there is something to please everyone, either on tap or bottled. They also offer a fine selection of Irish whiskey and wines. So grab some friends and drop in

for a wee jar – it’s good for what ails you and if nothing ails you – hey – it’s good for that too! Sláinte!!
